Attorney for Embattled Ex-Parsippany Cop Being Sued for Slander

James Carifi has 30 days to obtain a new lawyer or will have to represent himself in document withholding case.

Another snag has hit the ongoing saga of an ex-Parsippany police officer and the township that employed him as an attorney has been excused from the case.

According to dailyrecord.com, attorney Arthur Margeotes, representing former Capt. James Carifi, is now at the center of a $2.5 million slander lawsuit from his former employer, a Caldwell-based law firm.

Margeotes allegedly slandered Patrick P. Toscano Jr., his former employer, during a conversation with a counselor for the Joint Insurance Fund that would indemnify Parsippany for legal losses in the Carifi case, the report said.

Toscano formerly represented Carifi, the report said.

Carifi has been taken to court by Parsippany for allegedly keeping electronic devices that have confidential police records and documents on them, which he secured prior to his abrupt resignation in the spring of 2013.

Margeotes was officially relieved of his representation of Carifi Wednesday, and the former police captain now has 30 days to obtain new counsel or he will be forced to represent himself, the report said.
