The checkpoint started operations at 8:00 p.m. Friday night and concluded seven hours later, police said. Officers from the PPD, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and the Andover Police Department staffed the sobriety checkpoint, police said.

Drivers were stopped at random, police explained. Officers who staffed the checkpoint stopped every fourth vehicle and directed them to a testing area where other officers checked their credentials, distributed Driving Under the Influence literature and, if warranted, performed sobriety testing.

While the checkpoint was in operation, police said 644 vehicles were stopped, 62 summonses were issued and six arrests were made.

Those arrests included three for driving under the influcence and controlled substance offenses, one for DUI and possession of a weapon (a police-style nightstick), one for possession of drug paraphernalia and a final one for outstanding arrest warrants, police said.

The checkpoint, part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, was funded by a grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.
