District 1 Fire Truck Involved in Traffic Accident

Police say the driver of a car wasn't paying close enough attention while a fire truck tried to negotiate a turn onto Powder Mill Road.

A truck was involved in an accident with another vehicle while on a call Monday afternoon, said

At about 12:25 p.m., District 1 Fire was called to respond to Gates Court to investigate a report of an elevator entrapment, police said.

An MTVFD truck dispatched to the scene was traveling west on Route 10. Police reported the vehicle's emergency lights and siren were activated.

The truck stopped at the intersection of Route 10 and South Powder Mill Road to make a left turn, and officials said the left and center lanes of traffic on eastbound Route 10 stopped to yield to the emergency vehicle. The truck began to make the turn, another car traveling east on Route 10 in the right lane reportedly drove through the intersection and was struck by the piece of fire apparatus.

Police said the car, which was in motion, was hit on the driver’s side and came to rest on the grass on the southeast corner of the intersection.

The driver and passenger of the car were transported to Morristown Medical Center for further evaluation, police said.

An accident investigation revealed that the car driver's inattention contributed to the cause of the crash, according to officials.

Police said no summonses were written in relation to the incident.
