Hiding Officer Catches Repeat Convenience Store Shoplifter, Police Say

Bacilo Egoavil had $10.60 worth of stolen items in his pockets, according to report.

A Bergen County man who shoplifted three days in a row last week from a Parsippany convenience store was caught when he tried a fourth time, police said.

Bacilo Egoavil, 40 of Lyndhurst, was issued a summons for shoplifting and released pending a court appearance, police said.

According to police, a man, later identified as Egoavil, shoplifted last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from the Exxon On the Run convenience store located at 3019 Route 46.

Upon hearing about the three incidents, Patrol Officer Jeff Papienuk put extra attention on the store Monday morning around 7 a.m. and he saw a man matching the alleged thief's description outside of the gas station, according to a release from Officer Remo D’Alessandro.

Papienuk hid behind a display rack to watch Egoavil, who “walked around the store suspiciously for several minutes, where he lingered in front of several display racks before ultimately paying for only a cup of coffee and two bottles of soda,” according to the release.

Papienuk approached him before he left the store and Egoavil ultimately removed several food and drink items he didn’t pay for that were hidden in his pockets, police said. The items totaled $10.60.

The store’s management identified Egoavil as the same man who shoplifted the three times last week, police said.
