An East Hanover man who went to check on footsteps his sister heard Sunday evening saw an intruder dressed in black and wearing a ski mask run down a staircase and out the front door of their home, police said.
The incident, which occurred in a home on Beechwood Lane in East Hanover around 6:44 p.m., sparked a search that involved East Hanover police, the Morris County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit and Criminal Investigation Section, and the Florham Park, Livingston and Parsippany police departments, according to an East Hanover police report about the incident.
No items were reported missing from the home, and the intruder was not found, police said. The resident said he believed the intruder entered through the garage, which was left open.
The resident chased the intruder into a wooded area behind the home, toward the rear parking lot of East Hanover Middle School, the report says.
The homeowner said in an interview her adult son and daughter were home at the time, while she and her husband were out. She said they are concerned someone was watching the house.
"You feel totally invaded," she said.
