Former Par-Troy Man Charged with Sexual Assault of Teen Loses Teaching Rights

The State Board of Examiners has suspended Scott Van Hoven's teaching certificates until his legal situation is resolved.

The State Board of Examiners announced its decision to suspend the teaching credentials of a former Parsippany resident indicted for the alleged sexual assault of a former student while he taught music in Paterson, NJ.com reported.

As of Nov. 1, Scott Van Hoven's teacher of music certificate of eligibility and teacher of music certificate are suspended until the criminal proceedings against him are resolved. As part of the decision, the board stipulated that should the man be convicted, he will be forbidden for working in an government position ever again, the article said.

Van Hoven, then 44, allegedly had sex with a 16-year-old girl in May 2010 at his Par-Troy apartment and, the following month, in his office at Paterson's John F. Kennedy High School, the article said. He was indicted on five counts of sexual assault, six counts of criminal sexual contact, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of official misconduct.

The man has been free on $125,000 bail since July 2010 and now lives in upstate New York, the article continued.
