Parsippany Cop Trashed on Facebook: ID Theft?

Lawyers says client who allegedly created fake page on social media site didn't break the law.

Lawyers for a Belleville woman say New Jersey's identity theft law doesn't apply to allegations that she created a fake Facebook profile about her former beau, a Parsippany police detective, according to a report in the Daily Record.

Dana Thornton, 41, was indicted in Morris County last year on one count of fourth-degree identity theft. She faces up to 18 months in prison if found guilty.

The indictment alleges that after Thornton and Det. Michael Lasalandra stopped dating last year, Thornton created a Facebook page using her ex-boyfriend's personal information. The fake profile reportedly was presented as if it was Lasalandra's page and included his name, birth date and comments that disparaged the detective for his life choices and career, according to the Daily Record.

So, what do you think? Should this and incidents like this be considered identity theft?
