Not Guilty Plea for Couple Charged in Boonton Murder

Defendants face life in prison without parole if convicted in the 2011 slaying of Nazish Noorani.

The say they are innocent of the crime.

Kashif Parvaiz and Antoinette Stephen, both 27, stood separately in Superior Court in Morristown Monday and pled not guilty of consipiring to murder Nazish Noorani, the 27-year-old wife of Parvaiz, according to a Daily Record report.

Noorani was gunned down on the night of last Aug. 16 as she and Parvaiz walked along a residential street in Boonton while pushing a stroller containing their 3-year-old son. Parvaiz was shot as well—authorities contend this was .

Stephen, of Billerica, Mass., is alleged to have been the shooter.

The child, one of Noorani and Parvaiz's two children, was unharmed.

The family, from Brooklyn, N.Y., were in Boonton to visit relatives to celebrate Ramadan.

Authorities said Parvaiz claimed that he and his wife were attacked by three "terrorists" who shouted anti-Muslim slurs at them.

The alleges that the two conspired in the planning of the crime. The Daily Record reported that Parvaiz would reward Stephen “by payment or promise of payment of anything of pecuniary value” and that she would shoot Noorani.

The report continued, saying Stephen's lawyer is considering having his client evaluated, though he did not say if he would attempt to use a mental health defense on her behalf.

Meanwhile, Parvaiz’s attorney John Bruno announced that he would file court motions to suppress his client's statements to police and to change the trial site due to widespread media coverage of the killing, according to the Daily Record.

Both lawyers reportedly said they would file motions to have the indictments dismissed.

The next court appearance in the case is scheduled for Oct. 15.
