Parsippany Man Jailed for Attempted Murder Loses Appeal

Sai Ramesh Maddi kicked, bit, burned and stomped on his wife Sireesha Pesala, fracturing five of her vertebrae, according to a report.

A Parsippany man who was convicted in 2005 of the attempted murder of his wife lost his appeal of a Superior Court's decision denying his claim of ineffective assistance of counsel during his trial, according to a recent report.

Sai Ramesh Maddi, 38 of Parsippany claimed that he had “ineffectual representation” from his counsel during his trial, in which he was convicted of attempted murder of his wife Sireesha Pesala, of an arranged marriage, according to nj.com.

According to the report, “the appellate court affirmed Superior Court Judge Thomas Manahan's decision to dismiss Maddi's petition after finding that counsel had communicated numerous plea offers to Maddi, kept him 'well-informed,' and that Maddi had 'full knowledge of the status and particulars of his case.' The appellate court concurred with Manahan finding that Maddi had exhibited no inclination towards pleading guilty prior to trial.”

Maddi received a 15-year term in prison with a seven-and-a-half year period of parole ineligibility on the attempted murder conviction after he “physically assaulted her by kicking her, biting her, burning her with a heated metal spoon and — on June 4, 2001 — stomping on her back while she was laying prone on the floor nude.”

During the trial, an emergency room physician testified Pesala's suffered five fractured vertebrae and that the force of the assault could have killed her.

“Pesala also told the court that Maddi said he 'got (a) green signal' from his parents that he could kill her and remarry,” according to the report.

Maddi was convicted of attempted murder, aggravated assault and criminal restraint in July 2005. He is scheduled to be released on Aug. 3, 2014, according to the report.
