Parsippany Man, Retired Sheriff's Lt. Accused of Robbing Boonton Bank

A Parsippany man has been charged in the robbery of a Boonton bank after allegedly stealing money from the financial institution Wednesday morning, Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp announced Thursday.

Harry Schnitzer, 70, was arrested for allegedly entering the Santander Bank on Main Street in Boonton at 10:08 Wednesday morning, and demanded money, Knapp said. Authorities say the senior citizen also threatened to get a gun if the teller did not comply.

Schnitzer then fled the scene on foot, Knapp said. A warrant was issued by Judge Robert Gilson Thursday charging Schnitzer with first-degree robbery. Schnitzer retired as an Essex County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant in 2002, Knapp said.

Gilson set bail at $200,000 full cash without a 10-percent option, and Schnitzer was sent to the Morris County Correctional Facility.
