Paterson Man Reports Hit-and-Run Crash Then Says It Didn't Happen

The following arrest information was supplied by the Parsippany Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Authorities say a Paterson man faces a court appearance for allegedly trying to file a fake hit-and-run report with police.

report Officer Steven Miller met William Prempeh, 22, at the scene of Parsippany and Eastmans roads at about 9:48 Friday morning.

Prempeh told Miller that he was in his 2001 Volkswagen Golf making a right turn on green onto Parsippany Road when a silver Subaru traveling north ran the red light, struck the Golf and fled the scene. Police said Prempeh added that he believed the engine of his car was knocked off its mounts.

According to police, Miller saw minor damage to the front fender of Prempeh’s vehicle, but nothing consisted with the accident described.

Continuing the investigation, the officer followed a trail of oil from the Volkswagen that led back into the parking lot, out onto Parsippany Road and back to Interstate 287 North off-ramp, police said.

When confronted with this information, police said Prempeh changed his story, saying that his auto problem was mechanical in nature and that his car had never been in an accident at all.
Officer Miller charged the suspect with filing a false report with police. Prempeh was released from the scene pending a court appearance.
