Erratic Driver Was On Drugs, Police Say

Paterson man faces drug charges and was issued nine motor vehicle summonses last Friday night.

A Paterson man under the influence of drugs drove erratically 

Hassan Ammar, 27, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, use/under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance and received nine motor vehicle summonses.

Officer Alfred Keiser saw a silver 2000 Pontiac GrandAm traveling southbound on North Beverwyck Road that stopped about 20 feet before a red traffic signal with no vehicles in front of it last Friday night at about midnight, police said.

Keiser continued to followed the car onto Route 46 East and witnessed Ammar swerve into the right shoulder and continue to swerve within his lane, police said.

Keiser pulled Ammar over on Route 80 East, according to a release from Officer Remo D’Alessandro, community relations officer.

Ammar had a suspended driver’s license and an outstanding warrant from the Creskill Boro Municipal Court in the amount of $1,000, according to the release.

Police said Keiser “suspected the driver to be impaired” and after a brief investigation, Ammar was arrested and searched. The search revealed “a rolled dollar bill with whitish powder substance inside, commonly used to ingest CDS (controlled dangerous substance)" in Ammar’s pocket, D’Alessandro said.

Ammar was taken to police headquarters, processed on the drug charges and also received motor vehicle summonses for driving under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to maintain lane, driving while suspended, unregistered vehicle, failure to exhibit a driver’s license, failure to exhibit proof of insurance and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle.

Ammar is being held at the Morris County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 bail with no 10 percent option.
