Police Chief: If You Must Drive, 'Use Extreme Caution'

The driving ban is still in place, but police know people need to obtain food and supplies.

Parsippany's state of emergency is still in effect, including a ban on motor vehicle traffic, is still in effect, says Parsippany Police Chief Anthony DeZenzo. But he said in a statement that officials do understand that people must acquire food and generator fuel.

"If it is absolutely necessary for you to leave your home for these items, use extreme caution while driving and only drive during daylight hours," he said.

Township crews are "working extremely hard to open roadways," the chief said, "but many roads are still impassible, and many traffic signals are without power to operate them and many intersections remain uncontrolled."

He said a lot of live electrical lines are still down in travel lanes of travel and many large, old-growth trees are still falling due to damage caused by Tropical Storm Sandy. 

"The safety of our citizens remains our paramount concern," said DeZenzo. "We will lift the ban on motor vehicle travel as soon as we can safely do so."

The chief added that 9-1-1 is to be used for genuine emergencies only.
