Parsippany Police Chief to Resign Post as of March 1

Anthony DeZenzo says he'll take some time off before deciding his next professional move.

After 32 years in law enforcement, Parsippany Police Chief Anthony DeZenzo says he's stepping down from his position as of March 1.

"It's true," he told Patch, confirming rumors that have been swirling around Town Hall for the past week. "I turned in my papers last Friday."

There have been rumors that the chief will move on to the Morris County Prosecutor's Office. DeZenzo said that as of now, that is not true.

"I have no job offer at this time," he said, adding that he will take some time off to relax, spend time with family and evaluate his options.

There is no word yet as to who will replace the outgoing chief, though Deputy Chief Paul Philipps, now second in command, would appear to be next in line. It is possible, however, that Mayor James Barberio could choose to bypass Philipps in favor of one of the four police captains.

DeZenzo offered high praise for the officers serving under his leadership since he became Parsippany's sixth police chief after former Chief Michael Peckerman retired in September 2011.

"I have really enjoyed the people who work here, the rank and file," he said.

He said he'll have more to say on the matter in the future, but for the present, he acknowledged his appreciation for his year-plus stint as Parsippany's top cop.

"It's been a great run," he said.

Stop with my dumb conspiracy theories. The retirement payout is contractually and you'll know it soon enough.
Sabot February 14, 2013 at 12:55 PM
You can start with the $1 million per year in attorney fees. That's about 2-3 times what the firm gets. You don't win an argument by pulling numbers out of you know where,
Sabot February 14, 2013 at 12:59 PM
The mayor has stabilized taxes, kept budget increases well under Christie's cap and has lowered sewer fees for everyone. As far as municipal tax increases the past 4 years have been the lowest in decades. Put on your glasses and read your bill.

Look mommy, I'm a real police chief! I wonder if I will be able to ride my horsey home at night?

Lets all just be a little easy on the Mayor!! You have to remeber that the town is approximately 27 square miles with a population of at least 50,000. We have miles of Interstate Highways that run thru out town and a budget of at least $60,000,000. So when you think of all these responsibilties for one man with no college degree and a lack of professional experience prior to becoming Mayor we need to give him a major learning curve. So please don't get upset that were wasting millions of tax payers dollars! Be pateint he has a major learning curve that he is trying to over come due to his lack of education and experience.

This information is public record as are all salaries of all Parsippany public employees. Very easy to find if you take the time.
Janet Saulter-Hemmer February 14, 2013 at 03:27 PM
WOW....who knew it was actually the MAYOR who caused the flooding? Didn't realize he had more power than God.
Tushar R February 14, 2013 at 03:31 PM
Alexa, I am not a lawyer and couldn't ever stand to become one of those blood-suckers. Sorry if I may have written at a reading level higher than you anticipated for someone with my name. 1. Police pension/retirement payouts have nothing to do with the local government. They are based on unused sick and vacation time. The recurring payments are dictated by the public employees retirement system. The mayor did not have anything to do with this. Also, the other candidates benefited or will benefit greatly from this setup as well. 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 14. I can't really specify because I don't know exactly what these refer to, but they seem to be exaggerations or emotionally-fueled statements. 7 + 9 are BoE issues. They handled that situation horribly. 10 + 13. The lack of nepotism is actually what has some of this year's potential candidates running in the first place. 11. I whole-heartedly agree that Cpt. Carifi should not be using his township vehicle for personal use. 12. Hurricane Irene.

Mayor I have lived in this town for the past 20 years and my children have been very invoved with activities. I have been very patient with your administration over the past three years. But i must tell you that my husband work two jobs and we are struggling to make our monthly mortgage and tax payments. I know that being in a leadership position is very stressful. But what I must ask you is why would you negotiate a contract with our Police Chief that has given him such a large payout? From what I was told is that you and our township attorney negotiated his contract and no one else. And I was told the Chief could have told you that he didn't want the contract and would of retired as a deputy chief at a lower salary and less benifits. But you gave him a contract that was in his best interest for him only.I was upset about other town contracts in the past but the Chiefs contract tops them all. Please expalin to me and the taxpayers why you would do this? I have nothing against the Chief but this is outrageous!
Frank Stross February 14, 2013 at 04:13 PM
Patrica H I know why the Mayor gave the Chief a big fat contract is because he is clueless and he could care less about the taxpayers!! He won't even attempt to expalin this BLUNDER !!
patchitup1 February 14, 2013 at 05:19 PM
I agree the Mayor must be clueless. He should have never made James Carifi a captain and gave him a free car to ride to all those wrestling matches with his family! He should have never supported Paul Carifi for town council so he could try a power grab like he did with his Paterson group of thugs who tried to out the sheriff. He was a fool for thinking that a united Parsippany was possible with all those poor friends of Mr Mosburg crying in their milk Over his legal problems. And since you are an expert on police contracts can you please let us know how much Lou Valori got in sick pay since he was out of work and getting payed for months before his $150,000 a year pension kicked in?

To "Phil L," I hope you wont be whining if the department starts "aggressively enforce vehicular laws." Actually based on articles in the DR and SL they're one of the most productive depts in the county....Just sayin!
g February 14, 2013 at 10:42 PM
Does anyone know if the sick and vacation pay the cheif recieved on retirement is based on tangible reviewable records or are they based on the recolection of the cheif?
G unit February 15, 2013 at 01:23 AM
Good riddens you waste of air. Corruption doesn't even begin to describe you. Hire back all the loads that didn't do anything when they were cops. Now they have cushy jobs to do nothing as civilian employees. How many of your load pals did you hire back anyway? Fred Knapp have fun with the load you're innevitably going to be hiring. Maybe you'll be able to keep him in the county where he works, while on the clock. Barberio obviously didn't keep a leash on this user. Dezenzo spent 90% of his time breaking bread in Newark, with his Essex pals and the other 10% assessing blame in every direction away from him.
mark molnar February 15, 2013 at 04:33 AM
So Mayor Barberio or should I say Patchup 1 you are truly a coward who hides behind his secret little name. I know you have many family issues to say the least but we will talk about them at another time. Just remember you have done nothing but disgraced the town and have used all you friends that helped you get where your at. And I cant't believe that you will be using Milin Shah just to get votes. All you are is a user and have no right to be representing the community. And your three mob boss wanna bees friends Vinnie Ferrera and Big Danny are truly another embarassment for the town. You guys just don't get it, the Parsippany residents are to educated to vote for you sub standard individuals.Maybe they should join your squeeze at the PAL for some special exercise classes! LOL!!

What ever will barney fife do without andy around to lead him aimlessly in angry and hatered.
Frank L February 15, 2013 at 03:40 PM
To the delusional "1fairguy"-- I , nor the residents of Parsippany, will be whining at all when this department starts aggressively enforcing vehicular and other laws and get these desk cops onto the roads to work toward some real law enforcement. The lack of leadership in this Police Department and Town Hall is criminal in and of itself. The township of approximately 50,600 people and 25.4 square miles has only two police officers manning the traffic division. What is their back up?? These two officers are assisted by signs, signs everywhere signs -- everything from "radar in use" notations on white speed limit signs, to middle-of-the-road stand alone signs and make-shift speed limit signs constructed by fed up, disgusted homeowners. This township is severely under patrolled on every level while the taxpayers are robbed blind as they pay the lofty and fraudulent police retirement packages/accumulated sick and vacation days when they leave. Everyone -- just wait for the news coverage on what the Par Troy taxpayers have to shell out to this useless Chief. And we can all thank this useless Mayor for that contract deal. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid delusional "1fairguy" while resorting to your "just saying" comments and media references as evidence support. You are wrong and ill-informed. Get your nose out of the newspapers, butt off the chair, and be more aware of your surroundings.
M Jarrett February 15, 2013 at 04:24 PM
Well said Phil L! Yeah, I bet that news coverage will send many taxpayers over the edge when they realize what they are funding for. So what is wrong with this town hall? You know, our Governor has courageously, admirably and tirelessly been speaking loud and clear to scrap these payouts all together and yet THIS Mayor is obviously NOT paying attention, NOT keeping faith with the taxpayer, NOT keeping his personal and friends’ agendas out of township business, and NOT running the township effectively for the benefit of its residents. I am frustrated because this Mayor can not even follow the sound guidance of one of the best governors you and I will see in a LIFETIME. Let’s all write a letter something like the following:
M Jarrett February 15, 2013 at 04:26 PM
Dear Mayor Barberio, Hi, it’s one of the THOUSANDS of annoyed taxpayers who voted for you in the last election but have had enough with your reckless tactics for which residents will be paying for years to come. There is not much thinking to do here, Mayor. This Governor has drafted a clear blue print regarding state, county and municipal reform and all YOU have to do is follow along. No fussing, no mussing and no need to add water. Just don’t get distracted by trying to reward friends who don’t accomplish anything for the township. Find a friend who can actually do something to benefit the taxpayer and their hard-earned dollar. Par-Troy resident/taxpayers are just asking you to read carefully and follow the directions of our effective state leader (for clarity, I am not referring to you, Mayor). Don’t follow your own gut, Mr. Mayor, because you are and have been getting it all wrong and taxpayers can’t afford your continued mishaps and side agendas! Mayor, take careful note, every tax dollar that is used to cash out police unused sick and vacation time should be going to limit tax increases to the taxpayer. That was the Governor speaking to this issue, not me. Please follow directions and stop ripping off the taxpayers.
M Jarrett February 15, 2013 at 04:27 PM
Voters should be sending you, Mr. Mayor, into retirement just like this Police Chief. Unfortunately it sounds like the outgoing Chief will be cashing in big time on the taxpayer dime. I am not looking forward to hearing what we will be paying to this township employee as he heads out the door with absolutely nothing accomplished for the taxpayers and homeowners. Signed, Don’t be too sure about your reelection
Vic February 17, 2013 at 07:25 PM
This costly contract is one that residents will be heavily paying for a long period of time. Thanks Mayor…. For absolutely nothing but big bills to pay! You should be cited for screwing the taxpayer for your buddy's contract which financially straps the community with nothing to show for it. Barberio, you are to blame for opening up the taxpayer bank vault for your useless, derelict pal without requiring your pal to reform the department, address its ills and be accountable to the community and its taxpayer residents. Under your watch Barberio, the PD has increasingly become a knee-jerk department that just takes reports AFTER crimes have been committed and files these reports away hoping for divine intervention to solve them. This department also fails to actively enforce laws and gets caught literally sleeping on the job for all to see on You Tube (yeah, I know it was under the lead of former Chief Peckerman- but there are lots more out TODAY in their trusty hiding spots snoozing away on township time and money). Additionally, this department continues to blow off residents' outreach, not return their calls or tells residents "we can't do that" when taxpayers have the audacity of asking for some real law enforcement for their tax dollar. No thanks to you Barberio for your bang up job.
Kathy Morgan February 17, 2013 at 07:32 PM
Mike M, you only got HALF the story here. When you call the Mayor's hotline to report problems with the police or other department heads caught not doing their jobs, Mr. Barberio's office ignores it, sweeps it under the carpet and lets the administrators’ derelict behaviors continue. This mayor is responsible for these recent years of allowing the lazy, unaccountable and cavalier culture of all departments to continue, looking like an unprepared do-nothing at town council meetings and accomplishing nothing during his term. That's why Mr. Barberio is scrambling to align himself with and use anyone, near or far, who can artificially spike voter counts in his favor as a last-ditch effort to maintain a job he has proven to be egregiously incapable and unwilling to handle properly and ethically for the welfare of the township.

Later to you, chief sitting bull! Feeling proud that you have acccomplished nothing, left nothing good behind that you have done for the town that even one person would remember you for in the future and talk about? Loser.

Mayor bribery?
Wilson March 11, 2013 at 06:42 AM
Don't forget Mayor Barberio's children are adding to the corruption by drinking at the firehouse while he is at work. He is the next one that should step down, and let the town's taxpayers chose the right candidate, while the police continue doing a great job.
Wilson March 11, 2013 at 06:45 AM
Especially Mayor Barberio's children that party and drink at the firehouse on the town's budget surplus.
