New Police Sergeant Named, Despite Patrol Concerns

Son-in-law of former town council president moves up from the investigative division.

Mayor James Barberio, Parsippany Police Chief Anthony DeZenzo and local law enforcement officers attended the Wednesday morning announcement that 13-year Parsippany Police vet Darren Theobald was promoted to sergeant.

Theobald is an experienced officer, police said. He received a police training certification from the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy in 1999. He holds an Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice from Fairleigh Dickinson University and is now pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree there in Public Administration.

In Parsippany, Theobald, a graduate of has served as a patrol officer and now works with the Investigative Division as a detective. He has worked as a DARE Officer at Lake Hiawatha and Northvail schools and has received numerous awards, including a lifesaving award, unit citations and command citations.

Theobald is the son-in-law of former Morris County Sheriff and former Town Council President John Fox.

The move comes during a longstanding debate within the town on police staffing and promotions.

Barberio announced Theobald would serve as a patrol sergeant.

DeZenzo said the promotion is needed as there are a number of vacancies on the force. He said Theobald will be working "on the streets."

"I'm just looking forward to getting to work in my new job," Theobald said after the ceremony.

After Theobald was sworn in by Barberio, Marcus Dalakian was sworn in as a new full-time police dispatcher.

This Mayor just doesn't seem to get it like odummer here, this town is getting unsafe and this guy just keeps promoting somemore friends and taking more officer's of the street again. This mayor has got to go, he is a big disappointment. Can anyone say corruption at its best here?
Mrs. K October 11, 2012 at 01:39 AM
Parsippany is a civil service town, Sgt. Theobald was the next person on the list to be promoted. It goes by the test score and your seniority, not who you are married to....so go find something else to blame on the mayor, this was out of his control.
VietNam Vet October 11, 2012 at 04:10 AM
Whats the matter, is he related to you or something? We don't need more Sgt. or LT.'s or Capt. behind a desk anymore, we need them out on the beat where they should be.
VietNam Vet October 11, 2012 at 04:13 AM
That's OK I'll make sure I don't vote for you especially if you are a dem.
Mike P October 11, 2012 at 04:19 AM
You're so right Mr. VietNam Vet. The all Republican council and Republican mayor are doing such a great job.
VietNam Vet October 11, 2012 at 04:40 AM
No Mike, they are not because the corruption goes on, thats why we need a change, but the last thing we need is a dem. messing thing up worse than this.
Mike P October 11, 2012 at 04:48 AM
And the "corruption goes on" as you say because people like you blindly vote down party lines. Why else do we have Mr. Barberio as mayor?
patchitup1 October 11, 2012 at 06:37 AM
Well Mr. Nelson let's see here? I said that the title of this article was unfit for the officer who's promotion was mentioned. I knew Bob and a few other fans of mine would jump in and that's par for the course, but to read your comment is very interesting! You say that you "write"and "speak up"to be accountable? Let's see... In some of your "comments" you say town residents come to you about stacking, and curbs and other things. How do they reach you? How do they know you? How do you know about families who are in line to be put out in the street? From info you get here on the patch or from meeting with certain reporters? You want your name posted for VOTES. You also grandstand to be seen on tv for votes. Who are you kidding calling me and others who live in town "disgusting" you sir may think and say as you please but you will NEVER get my vote. I'm sure you will loss with the attitude you showed here today!
sneakpete October 11, 2012 at 10:47 AM
As the crime goes up in parsippany so do the number of paper pusher sitting at desks at the police dept.
sneakpete October 11, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Blindly continue to stick your head in the ground Mrs. K. Being naive shows there is still some hope in the world.
Mrs. K October 11, 2012 at 02:20 PM
No, he is not related to me, I am stating facts. The fact that his father in law was the Sheriff is NOT relevant! If someone was skipped over for political reasons, the town would have had a lawsuit slapped on it like in years past. Moving Theobald from the detective bureau to the patrol division will put his back on the street. I am not naive, and I do not have my head in the ground, I am just informed. You both should try it, but I am gathering that would take more work then you are willing to do.
Mrs. K October 11, 2012 at 02:28 PM
How has the number of pencil pushers gone up? Storms was promoted to Captain, and a Lieutenants position was eliminated. Two sergeants are retiring in October. The budget has allotments for new hires, in which they are in the hiring process. Think before you type and do your research.
Jonathan Nelson October 11, 2012 at 02:35 PM
Patchitup1. The couple that was evicted for having a 6 month old child reached out to me on Facebook after he was turned away from the mayor's action center. It turns out that he and I, along with the Council President went to High School together. I'm not sure what comments I ever made about "curbs" on Patch but if you are referring to this past Council meeting which I don't believe has aired yet, I'd like to point out that there were only about 10 people in attendance that evening including elected officials who could have heard what I said.
patchitup1 October 11, 2012 at 02:45 PM
And reporters and your opposition for council. News travels
patchitup1 October 11, 2012 at 02:56 PM
You state on your sept 12 posts here on patch 4 couples contacted you and mentioned curbs & garbage sir.
Raybo128 October 11, 2012 at 05:06 PM
@Vietnam Vet - You should know that Sergeants are the first line supervisor and spend their shift out on the road with their squad. They are not on the desk. I think we all agree that police need supervision and someone to be responsible.
Raybo128 October 11, 2012 at 05:32 PM
Don't you love the way the reporter just sets the bait for the trawlers so they can manufacture outrage and spew their bitterness. Nice job patch.
Natalie Davis (Editor) October 11, 2012 at 06:18 PM
The article says clearly that Sgt. Theobald will be in the patrol division and will be working on the streets. Mrs. K: The relationship is relevant. The relative of a law enforcement veteran moves up in the field of law enforcement... that's an interesting layer of this story. The mention of a fact does not mean the fact is necessarily a negative thing. Whether the fact is good or bad is in the eye of the beholder. You decide that, not me. Patchitup, with all due respect, what you are hearing on the street is not news. It's gossip, lies, politically motivated innuendo. And it's untrue.
VietNam Vet October 11, 2012 at 07:42 PM
K, I believe you should open your eyes a little to what is going on here, the crime is on the upswing in this town and as long as things keep getting worse with the economy we are going to see more of a rise in the crime around here, and it is no secret, we are short on police officers in this town,
VietNam Vet October 11, 2012 at 08:00 PM
Mr. Raybo, you should know that with to many chiefs and no enough indians, nothing gets done either. I know I come from a police family, my brother retired as a police chief. We need more cops around here but the mayor doesn't want to hire any, he's always crying money all the time. In the mean time he has been overcharging us on our sewer taxes for years now with over a $ 7.4 million surplus, which he likes to use for his own little things, in the mean time the tax payers are being screwed over by this mayor and the last ones as well.
Mrs. K October 11, 2012 at 08:23 PM
No, Ms. Davis, the relationship did not influence Sgt. Theobald's score on the exam he took and the seniority he has in the department, which is what placed him where he was on the list, which was next to be promoted. You are adding a layer to the story that is unnecessary and trying to stir the already heated pot in this town. If it was relevant, it would have been in the press release. No one was skipped for Sgt. Theobald to be made, otherwise a lawsuit would have been filed already, as has been precedent in the town.
patchitup1 October 11, 2012 at 08:35 PM
With all due respect I heard for a month from the "news" that a video caused 4 Americans to lose there lives on Sept. 11 of this year. That it was not an attack. Seems now that the news was incorrect! My point is News is only as good as the source....I stated that the headline was not fair to the officer. Mr. Nelson & others opened the political box. He used this to once again point out that he is running for office. We get it.
Natalie Davis (Editor) October 11, 2012 at 08:44 PM
Well, that's your opinion and you are entitled to it. You are wrong, but you are entitled to be wrong.
Mike P October 11, 2012 at 08:58 PM
Vietnam Vet you have every right to vote for whom you like but one of the problems with this town is that people blindly vote party lines. Isn't that why we have people like Patchitup in office now? They guy you said you would never vote for has publicly said he was against promotions until more patrolmen were hired and all I ever hear him talk about is the sewer surplus you mentioned.
Mrs. K October 11, 2012 at 09:20 PM
And how am I wrong? Please enlighten me.
Bob Crawford October 11, 2012 at 09:23 PM
Patchitup1 What you don't seem to get or are not be able to tolerate are Parsipp[any residents who might differ from you and who have the guts to stand up to you and state their opinions and who, Heaven forbid ,might even run against you and/or one of your sycophants. Relax a little bit and trust in the truth even though you might find it politically uncomfortable when you hear it and/ or read about it on Patch. At the rate you are going you will self destruct long before November 2013 and what will Parsippany do without you to lead the way? Hmmm.
Ray October 11, 2012 at 09:31 PM
Patchitup The cuckoo who is on to himself is halfway out of the clock. And people are on to who you are.
Ray October 11, 2012 at 09:38 PM
And what did I write that was so inflammatory? All I wrote was the truth about how I feel about the mayor and all I did was provide a link about John Tiedemann I found on the town's own website.
VietNam Vet October 12, 2012 at 03:44 AM
Mikw, I may be a registered Republican in this town, but I vote for who I think will do the job, unlike many of the democrats who vote strickly party lines no matter how stupid the person may be. I vote for who I believe will do the job, I use my own head in something like that. Right now I haven't seen a candidate on either side who I can say without a doubt that I can trust except myself maybe, I once told the mayor when he came to my house one time that one of the big issues facing the people in this town is taxes. I told him how it can be fixed and to lower the taxes for the citizens here, and it would work, he told me the residents pay 60% of the tax burden here and the other 40 is picked by the businesses and the apartment complexes in town, that is not fair and he said he would look into it, but never did, instead he has made sure the taxes were raised some more. We are being screwed on the sewer and water taxes every year and he knows it, but as always he does nothing about it. I said the FREE town cars needs to stop, we have people who live down the shore and they have a FREE car because he is a firt responder in case of any problems in town. This so called first responder couldn't get here in time to take care of the problem, it would be over by the time he got here, not that he would even bother. That has to stop! as with the town administrator gets a car, for what? She doesn't live that far away and the job is not that crucial that she needs a car.
Natalie Davis (Editor) October 12, 2012 at 08:56 PM
You are wrong in telling me what my motivation is and casting aspersions against my character. I have no need to stir up anything. I do have, however, a need to be as complete in presenting facts as is possible. There is a massive difference.
