Route 46 Deemed 'Most Dangerous Road' in Morris County

Six pedestrians struck and killed on highway in three years, including four in Pine Brook, Parsippany area.

Route 46 has been labeled "Morris County's most dangerous road" by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign (TSTC) based on data that shows six pedestrians were killed on the highway in the past three years.

What appears to be the most dangerous stretch of the Morris County portion of the highway, as indicated on a map included in the TSTC report, is the portion that includes Pine Brook and Parsippany. Four out of six pedestrian deaths between 2009 and 2011 occurred between the two towns.

The report, generated by the non-profit organization which seeks transportation reform in New York and New Jersey, detailed and designated a single most dangerous road per county in every county in the state. The term "most dangerous," as included in the report, refers to the number of pedestrians struck and killed.

The data, as the report references from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, shows the following annual pedestrian fatalities on Route 46, as compared to the remainder of the county, as follows:

Road 2009 2010 2011 Total US-46 2 3 1 6

Annual Countywide Pedestrian Fatalities

2009 2010 2011 Total 3 8 2 13

*All data provided by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign.

While all of the pedestrians killed included in the report were adults, ages 16-59 years old, on other parts of Route 46, near Dover and Wharton, senior citizens were also reportedly killed over the time period surveyed.

The data does exclude highways and roads where pedestrians are prohibited.

Another dangerous Route 46 spot it Route 46 West in Budd Lake where the Route 80 exit 26 ramp merges onto 46. People speed down the ramp and drivers going west from Netcong change lanes from the right lane to the left lane and cut people off coming down exit 26.There have been a accidents where someone in the right lane cuts or hits someone in the left lane and forces them almost into the house there. People walk in the road going to Netcong creating a more dangerous situation.

They need to improve the entire road through Parsippany, they tried to get rid of the stupid speed bimps, but they made it just as bad as before. They have to repave the entire section through town.

I also wrote to the DOT..Besides three cars being able to get thru that light during the morning, noon, and night..its a hazard for people trying to cross or for cars trying to leave work and to route 80. Its enough already...change the way the lights work. It is archaic..but what else is new when the DOT doesnt send their people out to check this. I also blame the local police for not making the DOT VERY AWARE OF this situation. Maybe they have, but let the townships know about their awareness at this section in Parsippany..
