Sinkhole Takes Out I-287 Lane Into Friday Night

Incident at Exit 39 is affecting southbound traffic and motorists should plan alternate routes.

A sinkhole on southbound Interstate 287 in Hanover that formed Friday morning has resulted in the right lane of the highway being closed, and the lane is expected to remain closed into the night while the road is repaired, the New Jersey Department of Transportation reported.

DOT spokesman Tim Greeley said motorists should take alternate routes if possible, though three of the four lanes remain open.

The incident occurred near Exit 39, at Route 10.

The DOT said the right lane of the four-lane highway was blocked since the incident was reported at 11:16 a.m. The right lane is expected to reopen by around 10 p.m.

"That's a very highly traveled section of highway," Greeley said. "Even the loss of one lane can lead to a bit of an impact."
