Teen Who Sued Parents Says Boyfriend Choked Her, Files Restraining Order

Rachel Canning's father, Sean Canning, tells newspaper daughter was choked by boyfriend parents warned against.

Canning is back in the news this week after filing a restraining order against her on-again, off-again boyfriend for allegedly choking her, according to dailyrecord.com.

The restraining order is of a domestic violence, temporary category, and was filed in Denville after Canning and her boyfriend, Lucas Kitzmiller were in Mine Hill when he allegedly choked her with his hands during an altercation, the report said.

Canning fled the area in her car and went directly to the Denville Police Department where she filed the paperwork, the report said.

Specifics of the altercation, including Kitzmiller's alleged choking of Canning, were divulged by Canning's father, Sean, as those details are sealed in court documents, the report said.

The couple is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Morristown on Wednesday. While the restraining order cites domestic violence, no charges have been pressed against Kitzmiller, the report said.

Kitzmiller was a major factor in the Canning vs. Canning saga earlier this year, when court documents showed it was the girl’s relationship with the Mine Hill boy that drew the family apart.

Canning’s parents, Sean and Elizabeth, said their daughter, a student at Morris Catholic High School where she met Kitzmiller, became obsessed with partying and drinking after the teens became a couple. At one point in an email exchange between the girl and her parents, and ultimatum of “him or us” was posed.

Canning left her home in late October 2013 and stayed with friend Jaime Inglesino, daughter of Parsippany-Troy Hills Township attorney John Inglesino, in Rockaway Township. The Inglesino family fronted Canning attorney’s fees to file suit against her parents.

Rachel Canning’s suit was denied by a judge in Morristown, and just a few weeks later the family reconciled. Canning moved back home and has plans to attend Western New England University in the fall on a $56,000 scholarship.
