Council OKs Repairs to Veterans Park Fields

Repairs of Irene-damaged turf fields, already underway, will be paid for with open space funds.

More than $324,000 in open space funds will go toward emergency repairs of the turf fields at . The Parsippany-Troy Hills Township Council made the authorization at its regular meeting at Tuesday night.

The town's Parks and Forestry Director James Walsh said the turf field, or carpet, was damaged heavily during Parsippany's late summer weather crisis.

"The brook overflowed during Hurricane Irene," Walsh said. "It flooded the whole field, whereas in other storms, only half would flood. It moved the carpet and undermined some of the drainage area."

Business Administrator Jasmine Lim said, "If we repaired the fields, it would have cost about $95,000. Replacing the carpet or the turf will cost almost $325,000."

Lim explained that the turf field has a lifetime of about 8-10 years. Given that the fields damaged during the August storm are already about 8 years old, she said, they are already due for replacement.

The council gave approval to the repairs, which are already underway. The company handling the project is Field Turf USA of Georgia, which Lim said is the firm that installed the original turf fields.

Council members authorized the use of 2011 Open Space Trust Fund monies to pay for the Veterans Park field repairs.

In other business, the body advanced the process of having t. The council gave the waste treatment company approval to prepare and submit an application to the Local Finance Division, a necessary step in getting the state's blessing for the project. Once completed, Synagro also will have to win approval from the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The council also approved new lease agreements between the township and the and between the town and the .

I think this is absurd. There are people in Lake Hiawatha who are having difficulty in obtaining assistance to have their homes repaired after the hurricane and the town is paying upwards of 325K to have Vets turf field repaired for soccer???? And yes, my daughter plays soccer on Vets. I knew turf fields were expensive, but 325K for 8-10 years. You can a lot of grass for that!
