Doctor Illegally Performed Surgeries On at Least 9 Patients, Prosecutor Says

Parsippany-Troy Hills' Dr. Fadi Bejjani indicted on charges of practicing medicine with a suspended license.

A Parsippany-Troy Hills doctor was indicted Tuesday on charges of practicing medicine with a suspended license after county and state authorities said he performed surgeries he was not qualified to perform, including spinal and cosmetic procedures on at least nine patients.

Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp announced the two-count indictment of Dr. Fadi Bejjani, 56, of Roseland, along with Parsippany Police Chief Paul Philipps. He is being charged with third-degree unlicensed practice of medicine.

A complaint was filed by the state Attorney General's Office and Division of Consumer Affairs on June 5, 2012 including several alleged violations, such as performing unqualified surgeries; negligence; failure to notify the Board of Medical Examiners of a prior DWI charge and disciplinary action regarding his medical practice; a guilty plea for filing federal tax returns and more, Knapp's office said.

Knapp said Bejjani's license was suspended in June 2012. However, an undercover investigator from the Division of Consumer Affairs visited Bejjani's office in Parsippany on July 26, 2012 for a cosmetic surgery consultation, was examined, had surgery fees discussed and was provided consent forms with instructions for the operation.

Bejjani is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on charges of filing false federal tax returns, Knapp said. He is expected to be released, at the earliest, on Sept. 27. His license remains suspended.
