Majority of Morris Freeholders Now Opposed to County Police Force

Deputy Freeholder Director releases statement saying he no longer supports proposal.

The tables have seemingly turned on an idea that could have created a Morris County wide police force, as the majority of Freeholders now stand against the proposal.

According to dailyrecord.com, Deputy Director David Scapicchio said Tuesday he will recommend to his colleagues on May 14 that efforts to create a new law enforcement group cease.

Scapicchio said his meeting on April 28 with members of the Morris County Park Commission showed there was no support to study and potentially create a Morris County Police Department, the report said.

The yearlong analyzing of a potential countywide force has cost taxpayers more than $50,000 in studies.

The Board of Freeholders would need the Park Commission’s approval to transition the Park Police into another law enforcement group, the report said, and if approval was not granted, the governing body would have to vote to disband it. Finally, the Freeholders would have to put a plan to voters via referendum.

At long last, the insanity ends, but not before tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars are wasted.

Glad to see they came to their senses. County services are useless for the most part. If it fall within a township border then that town should be responsible. Poof, I just saved the taxpayers millions of dollars. AGAIN, county services are a WASTE!

Really? What is going to happen when the volunteer FDs are not able to roll engines? if anyone has looked around many Volunteer FDs have signs up year around now looking for manpower,30 years ago this was not the case in MC,why? who knows for sure but a lot of it is due to increased mandates on volunteers in terms of training and the fact that many living in MC do not work in MC anymore. Many work in NYC and attitudes have changed. 70 odd years ago the influx of returning veterans from WW2 swelled the ranks of most volly outfits because they missed the regiment and comradeship, those guys are dying off at an alarming rate and the voids are not being back filled by and large. So what is going to be done? each town have paid firemen? talk about a tax increase? Seriously there is a place for county services and the FD might be the first to go....

Bernie - Time to put down the beer. This is about a Morris County Police Department, not a Fire Department.
