Prepare for I-80 Lane Closures Friday and Saturday Night

NJDOT said the work is part of the ongoing project to shore up the interstate over I-287 and Smith Road.

Overnight lane closures are needed to remove concrete safety barrier and restore Interstate 80 over northbound Interstate 287 and Smith Road, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced Friday.

NJDOT’s contractor, Sparwick Contracting, has completed reconstruction work on the I-80 bridges in both directions at this location, on schedule, according to transportation officials.

To facilitate the removal of the concrete safety barrier, the department will utilize double and triple-lane closures on I-80 in each direction Friday until 6 a.m. and on Saturday.  I-80 is expected to be back in the original travel configuration by Sunday morning.

Construction began on the $6.4 million project in January 2011.  NJDOT replaced the four existing, structurally deficient I-80 bridge decks over I-287 northbound and Smith Road.  The project was scheduled in stages to ensure I-80 remained open to traffic in both directions at all times.

The precise timing of the overnight work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.  Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
