Smoking Now Banned in Parsippany Public Parks After Unanimous Vote

Girl Scouts put pressure on township to clean the air at parks and sports fields.

Parsippany’s parks and public play areas just got a whole lot better smelling.

The township council voted unanimously Tuesday night to prohibit smoking at parks, athletic fields, sports courts and play areas where sporting events take place, and will only be permitted in associated parking areas, according to dailyrecord.com.

Fines for violators are between $100 and $2,000, or up to 90 days in prison, the report said.

The ordinance came to the governing body thanks to a Girl Scout troop out of Rockaway Meadow School that uses the public park system often, the report said.

Once Mayor James Barberio signs the ordinance, the report said, the Parks and Forestry department will make no-smoking signs and put them up in the proper places around the township.
