ADK Celebrates Its Commitment to Service

Alpha Delta Kappa, the educators' sorority, is all about service.

The Parsippany chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, a fraternal organization for women educators, is celebrating International ADK Month. To mark the occasion, Mayor James Barberio visited a chapter meeting at the Board of Education building Thursday to present the group an official town proclamation.

"Teachers do an important job for the community, so it's important to acknowledge that," said Mayor Barberio, adding thanks to ADK for its work collecting money and gift cards to help those affected by the floods of Hurricane Irene in August.

As of Thursday, the group had raised $611 that will go to flood survivors.

Altruism Chairperson Carol Tiese said that in addition to the flood collection, which continues, the sorority is collecting nonperishable food items for a soup kitchen in New Brunswick.

"Other groups may be about socializing, but we're here to serve the community and show that teachers care," said Tiese. "And we have fun doing it."
