Books and Dr. Seuss Share Spotlight at Intervale School

Books were the star—along with a strange, tall feline in a striped hat—at Intervale Elementary School Friday morning.

The school spent the day celebrating Read Across America Day. Town leaders, residents and special guests visited Intervale to volunteer their time to promote literacy by reading Dr. Seuss books to the students.

The author born as Theodor Geisel would have been 109 years old on March 2. The Read Across America event pays tribute to Dr. Seuss and his silly, sensational books, which have given children enjoyment and helped them learn to love books for more than half a century.

Volunteer readers on Friday included Mayor James Barberio, Board of Education member Anthony Mancuso, Township Council member Jonathan Nelson, Parsippany Area Chamber of Commerce President Robert Peluso and Executive Director Craig Schlosser, and even Patch Editor Natalie Davis.

Reading specialist Rose DeFilippo, who organized the day's activities, said that Intervale students  have ranked among the highest achieving schools in the state over the past five years in the Read Across New Jersey program.
