Friday is Deadline to Vote on School Uniforms

Votes must be postmarked March 4.

Parents who are eligible to vote on the district's must mail their ballots on Friday, the deadline for postmarked votes.

Votes will be counted on Tuesday at the three schools where uniforms would be required next school year if 85 percent of the parents at each school approve the plan, said board member Debbie Orme.

All K-5  parents at Intervale Elementary School, and parents of sixth and seventh graders at Brooklawn and Central Middle Schools, will be eligible to vote. Parents of fifth-graders entering both middle schools can also vote.

The ballots will be counted by an administrator at each school, a  student representative and a PTSA representative, said Orme.

The plan drew some last month at information sessions on the proposal, with many parents raising concerns about cost. Some disliked the plan because they equated uniforms with conformity.

A group called for disrupting an information session at Brooklawn Middle School by distributing flyers on school grounds.

But Orme said that many parents have approached her privately to say they were in favor of uniforms.

"I'll be very curious to see the results,'' she said.
