Ice Cream Ban Comes to Parsippany Schools

The government-mandated move may affect local PTA fundraising efforts.

Another food-related controversy has come to the Parsippany school district, and this one may leave local kids screaming for ice cream.

Hard on the heels of the ongoing Parsippany Hills High School protest against the new federally-mandated lunch program comes another dictate from the government: no ice cream may be sold in schools during the school day.

The news is a blow for local Parent-Teacher Association groups, which traditionally offer ice cream for sale during lunch periods to raise funds for their organizational efforts.

Superintendent of Schools LeRoy Seitz said the district has no choice but comply with state law.

"7CFR 210.11 and NJAC 2:36-1:10 make it very clear that any type of food sale fundraising done by our PTAs or any other school organization cannot be conducted during the hours when our school nutrition program is in operation," he said. "Our recent directive to our building principals simply directed them to make sure we are in full compliance with these regulations for 2012-2013.

"While we fully understand that our students enjoyed the PTA ice cream fundraisers in the past and that the ice cream sale fundraiser was very successful for our PTAs, we cannot approve activities, including PTA ice cream sales that are in violation of state regulations."

Seitz said he asked principals to investigate other opportunities where ice cream could be sold outside of the school lunch program hours.

"We are also looking into whether our local recreational programs might be able to purchase the ice cream that many of our PTAs have already purchased in anticipation of conducting ice cream fundraisers during the 2012-2013 school year," he said.

The superintendent said that like area PTA members and students, he isn't happy about the news.

"It is unfortunate that we cannot permit the PTA ice cream sales during the hours that lunch is being served," he said.

Socialists are Statist, they are absolutely authoritarian in their philosophy. Their long-term goal has always been a Socialistic Dictatorship with full-imposition of a very legalistic society where the individual is simply a part of the collective. The State must step in to save the country and protect the people from the dangers associated with the inherent problems of free enterprise. Today, the call is very similar, the State must step in to protect the people. The State will protect you: NO MORE ICE CREAM No more free will. George Bernard Shaw speaking of the Socialist Utopia, he said: "Under Socialism, you would not be allowed to be poor. You would be forcibly fed, clothed, lodged, taught, and employed whether you liked it or not.

I love the way people just bend this story to fit their own reality. If people do not want the government to tell them how to educate their children, what they can sell in the cafeterias, how many calories should be in the maximum meal there is a very simple answer.... STOP TAKING FEDERAL DOLLARS FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. The only reason we have to listen to their rules is because we take their money. Just stop taking the money and you can make what ever decisions you want. None of you want that though. You just want to sit here with your hand out TAKING federal dollars and then bitching that they want you to spend them a particular way. You state they are trying to control you. Well, break free. Say NO MORE. We can do this with out your help, thank you very much. Keep your kids home and home school them, send them to a private school. Those are both options too. The problems may still exist in the public schools but they won't affect you.

Analli Citall, Where does the government get the federal dollars which you say," ...the with your hand out TAKING federal dollars and then bitching that they want you to spend them a particular way." "You state they are trying to control you" The State must step in to save the country and protect the people from the dangers associated with the inherent problems of free enterprise. What you don't seem to get g, is this is coming down from the FEDS, because Odummer's ugly half doesn't like fat people and she wants to see all kids on a diet and no more sweets.

Mr. Vet, this is coming down from the state. Ice cream can fit federal nutritional guidelines, as PTAs and Superintendent Seitz and reading the law will tell you. What's stopping the PTA sales is the state law saying PTAs specifically cannot sell food items during school breakfast and lunch hours. You may be right or wrong about the merits of lack thereof of the POTUS and FLOTUS and feds, but this is not about them. It's about state law.
