School Board Member Ends Re-Election Campaign

Deborah Orme backs out, incumbent ticket now will include challenger Alison Cogan.

The tenure of longtime Parsippany member Deborah Orme is coming to an close.

The chairwoman of the school board's Teaching and Learning Committee had launched a re-election campaign for November. But on Aug. 30, according to the Morris County Clerk's Office, Orme submitted a letter asking to have her name removed from the ballot.

Orme also confirmed her departure from the race to Patch, adding that she will discuss the move in the near future.

No reason for her withdrawal has been revealed publicly.

Orme has served on the BOE since her first election to the school board in April 2006.

Board President Frank Calabria called Orme's decision "a real loss."

"She's a good and fine board member," he said. "No one on the board knows more about curriculum and instruction than Debbie. She has real insight and knowledge in that area. She just excelled. Good board members do their homework, and Debbie was always prepared.

"I'm very proud to have been associated with her," he added. "I know she will continue to do good things for the community."

School board colleague Anthony Mancuso said Orme's departure will mean the loss of a thoughtful advocate for education.

"I am sorry to see that Debbie has decided not to run again," he told Patch. "She has proven herself to be an outstanding board member, always pushing us to find more funding for classroom technology and teacher support. She has been a strong supporter of our special education programs, always keeping their needs in our thoughts as we make decisions.

"She has served this community and district well and will be missed."

Calabria said Orme had an impact on Parsippany education that will be long-lasting.

"It's because of her that I've been thinking of opening up some committee members to the public," he said. "Even if I do not win [in November], I hope that will continue."

Of course, Calabria said he believes having candidate Alison Cogan take Orme's spot on his slate with fellow incumbent and BOE Vice President Frank Neglia is a winning choice.

"I have worked with her on the PTA Council," Calabria said. "She's also a certified public accountant. She's demanding and her expectations are high for the schools. I've seen her leadership skills, insight, knowledge and caring first hand."

As of now, : incumbents Calabria and Neglia and challengers Cogan, James Carifi, Anthony DeIntinitis and Joanne Mancuso.

Calabria said he believes all the candidates are worthy, but that because of his personal experience with her work, Cogan stands out.

Cogan has not been able to be reached for comment.

On Nov. 6, Parsippany voters will have the opportunity to select three members to sit on the school board for three-year terms.

The entire Parsippany School Board needs to be kicked to the curb.
Alison Cogan September 13, 2012 at 12:46 PM
The Parsippany BoE is losing a lot of hard-earned experience with Debbie Orme not running again. While I might be replacing Ms. Orme on the election ticket, no one new to the BoE could replace her knowledge and familiarity with the district . I am excited to run for the Board again, because I think I can help continue the progress that has been made in our district. I feel that I have learned a lot over the past year by attending BoE meetings and getting more involved with my children's schools, and am looking forward to both the election and hopefully serving on the Board of Education.

"Progress," you must be joking.

Debbie Orme was nothing but a big mouth and a trouble maker. She didn't give a darn about the citizens of this town or the seniors here, who can no longer afford the higher taxes that she has no problem with. What they are going to miss is someone who goes along with things as usual. When is this town ever going to wake up to the stupidity that is running that board. The only reason she has dropped out is because she knew that there was no way she was going to win again and the next one to go now will be Neglia, another trouble maker and then it Mancuso turn next year, who has started all the contract trouble with the money grubbing Speitz, who still has no legal contract yet. If Joanne Mancuso runs for the board and she works for the schools, this is a conflict of interest. When does this town ever wake up to the stupidity going on here, and how we are being screwed left and right. I urge all the seniors if they can please come out and vote these people out in the next elections. We must get rid of Neglia and Calabria this year and next year we have to get rid of the Mancuso's and stop the idiocy going on in this town. This has got to be one of the crookedest towns I have ever lived in and it has to stop NOW!!!!!

Thank god orme is leaving. We do not need a self absorbed drama queen making descision that can hurt so many.
Monica Sclafani September 14, 2012 at 01:46 PM
... and you're basing this opinion on personal experience? Funny, JoJoe, I've never seen you at a Board meeting as I can name all the people that attend. So how are you forming your opinion? Mrs. Orme has made many contributions to this district. Her experience and dedication will be missed.

This is why the corruption in this town has been able to go on for so long, because of people like Monica S. They keep voting for their crooked friends.

It's the whole county, Paul. It's more corrupt than Hudson County.

Orme is saving us the trouble of putting her out of her position on the BOE. We also need to get rid of Calabria and Neglia, like we did Choffo. They are the ones who disregarded what the residents of Parsippany had to say about the back-door move of getting Seitz a raise when other people are being forced to take less. Next year we will also go after Mancuso. Only teachers and teacher aides think Orme was so great. They all stick together.

John you are so right, these idiots have only been looking out for their own interests and the hell with the taxpayer of Parsippany. The taxpayer deserve better than these 3 and 4 idiots who think of no one but themselves and whats in it for them.
Scott Dean September 20, 2012 at 10:02 AM
Im wondering if this stepping down has anything to do with Mr.Strummolos concerns that he went public with? Which member wilingly did not complete a backround check?
John M September 29, 2012 at 06:18 PM
I see the lawn signs are going up for Calabria,Neglia, and Cogan.
Natalie Davis (Editor) September 29, 2012 at 06:44 PM
Scott, according to the district, all the BoE members complied with and passed background checks.
Monica Sclafani September 29, 2012 at 09:47 PM
Mr. Dean, perhaps you'd like to enlighten us with what, exactly, Mr. Strumolo's concerns are? ALL Board members passed their background checks. What are you and Mr. Strumolo inferring?
VietNam Vet September 30, 2012 at 02:02 AM
We have to do everything we can to get rid of these people and keep Cogan from going anywhere. Calabria and Neglia are still two of the original trouble makers who started the crap with Spietz contract and they have to go, we need them out NOW to avoid them from bringing in more of their corrupt friends. Next year its Mancuso's turn to be thrown out because of the all the problems he has cost us, i.e. the lawsuits now from spietz against the town for the contract and the suit from the board against him forr the overpayment that he refuses to give back to the taxpayers. These people have to be thrown out NOW!!!!!!
