7 Morris-Area Track Athletes Headed for National Competition

A season of hard work is paying off, as seven of Morris County’s best young athletes are heading to the USATF National Youth Indoor Track and Field Championships in Landover, Maryland this weekend.

The top-6 finishers in each event at the Northeast Zone Championships, which took place in Toms River on Feb. 22 and 23, advanced to the national competition.

Among them, from the Morris County Track Club, is Denville’s Matias Pellegrino, who won first place in the boys long jump (age 13-14), with a leap of 5.5 meters. Pellegrino also took first in the triple jump for the same age group with a mark of 10.9 meters.

Mendham’s Aidan Kamp also took first place in the long jump in the age category of 11-12, flying 4.68 meters.                                                                        

Morristown’s Bayliss Simon took third place in the girls 9-10 age group, making a jump of 3.74 meters.

Two Parsippany athletes are part of the group as well. Nana Agyemang came in third in the boys long jump in the 11-12 category. His final jump was 4.67 meters. Agyemang also came in fourth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.93 seconds.

Rawle Workman, of Parsippany, came in fifth in the 11-12 long jump with a leap of 4.11 meters.

Hopatcong’s Noah Cooper qualified in the boys eight-and-under category by coming in sixth in the long jump with a mark of 2.74 meters. Hackettstown’s Jayner Gorospe took fourth in the boys 15-16 category of 55-meter dash with a time of 6.92 seconds.

Coach Horacio Pellegrino said in a statement, “We are very excited to once again send so many athletes to compete on the national stage. These results prove that we provide our athletes with the coaching and training that allows them to succeed to the best of their abilities.”

The national competition is set for March 8 and 9 in Maryland.
