Ten Seniors Return For New Season at PHS

A peek at the season ahead.

The weather is starting to warm up (pay no attention to the snow on the ground), and that means spring sports are about to start for varsity squads. As opening day approaches, we're taking a look at each of the teams as they ready for competition. Today, we take a look at the Parsippany baseball team.

Overview

With 10 returning seniors bolstering a deep Parsippany roster, head coach Ken Dobkin is anticipating a big year from his Red Hawk squad. With a strong pitching staff led by two seniors and a starting lineup consisting of eight seniors, experience will play an integral role in Parsippany’s success on the diamond in 2011.

Keep your eye on

  • Clayton Cerrato, Pitcher, First Base (Sr.)—The ace of the Red Hawk staff in 2011, look for the senior hurler to put up impressive numbers on the mound.
  • Matt Zolla, Pitcher, Outfield (Sr.)—The only other senior on the Parsippany pitching staff this season, Zolla will help lead the Red Hawks’ young staff in 2011.

They'll miss

  • Andrew Matti, Shortstop- The senior shortstop was a huge part of Parsippany’s success in 2010 as he was named first team all-conference.
  • Brian Riley, Centerfield- Also selected to the all-conference team in 2010, the Parsippany centerfielder’s presence will be missed both in the field and at the plate.
  • Matt Nicosia, Catcher- As the Parsippany backstop in 2010, Nicosia was also selected all-conference as a senior.

Coach's Take

“We have a lot of seniors coming back, 10 of them on the roster and about seven or eight of them will be in the starting lineup. It’s the seniors’ team to lead. They’ve got the experience out there and there’s a lot of responsibility on them. We have one junior out there in the field, but the rest are sophomores, so they’re going to have to step up in some key spots. We’re looking for a strong year.”- Dobkin

They said it

“We have a lot of starters returning and we should have a pretty good season. We have a new catcher and shortstop, but we should be able to make a good run in states.” –Cerrato

“We’re looking good, returning a lot of kids this year. We should have around eight starting seniors, which will bring a lot of experience. We should be good.” -Zolla
