Parsippany High Falls Short

Madison too much for Red Hawks.

On Monday night in Madison, the Parsippany High School wrestling team came up short in their bid for a conference title, as they fell to Madison 36-34 in what was a nail biter the whole way through.

The fans were on the edge of their seats the whole way through on Monday night as momentum swings back and forth quickly became the norm. With the lead continuously changing hands, neither team could grab control with neither team leading by more than nine points at any time.

“They’re tough,” Parsippany head coach Fred Piotrowsky said of Madison. “They’ve got some tough kids and they did what they had to do. We have to take advantage of the situation. Obviously tonight, we had a match or two that we didn’t take advantage of.”

So with this match up in the air from the start, it’s no wonder that it came down to the nights final match.

After 152-pounder Nick Pizzuto won a tough triple overtime match Madison’s Pete Willis, giving Parsippany a 34-30 lead with one match remaining, Madison senior Ed Carr caused the gym to erupt as he caught Pete Jones with a first period headlock, resulting in a 36-34 Parsippany loss.

Parsippany opened the night with success as James Morgan (171 pounds) stopped Nick Haboj in the first period, giving Parsippany a 6-0 advantage. But just as quickly as Parsippany took the lead, they’d see it slip as Madison189-pounder Jack Anzul stepped recording a first period fall over Omir Sheera, tying the match at 6-6.

Wins by Pat Fails (215 pounds), Anthony Farrese (103) and Sam Kovacs (112), would help surge Parsippany ahead, 21-12, giving the Red Hawks their biggest lead of the night before Patsy Davis (119) got the Dodgers back on track with a yet another first period fall.

John Costa (125 pounds) would follow up the Davis win by battling to a grueling 4-3 victory over James Petro, leveling the score at 21-21.

“We had to win one or two matches down below and we didn’t win them,” Piotrowsky said. “Both were close matches and we lost them.”

130-pounder Mike Persaud would immediately answer the Dodger advance, stopping Conor Stark in the first period, jetting Parsippany back out in front, 27-21.

After losses at 135 and 140 pounds –putting Parsippany in a 30-27 hole- Parsippany senior Phil Tomaro (145) got the Red Hawks their fifth lead of the night with a 9-0 win over Mike Coviello.

But the win wouldn’t be enough to earn Parsippany a title as missed opportunities early led to the devastating loss.

“We had the right matchups, but we lost them," Piotrowsky added. "What are you going to do? It went the other way.”
