Week 6 Highlighted By a Milestone Win

Madison continues streak; Par Hills earns win.

Week 6 of the NJAC season was full of excitement, milestones and continued winning streaks as one coach reached an impressive milestone, another club extended long winning streak and one player out-witted everyone else on the field.

Hennelly Earns Career Win No. 100

For the West Morris football team, wasn’t just the team's fifth win of 2011. It wasn’t just a terrific fourth quarter performance. And it wasn’t just a win that helped the Wolfpack continue its impressive play this season, seating them comfortably in second place in the American Division.

While any regular season win is relished by everyone involved, Friday was special for more than all of that, as the win was West Morris head coach Kevin Hennelly's 100th career victory, according to the Daily Record.

And while that monumental accomplishment is especially worth mentioning, there were a few other members of the Wolfpack who did their best to outshine Hennelly (100-56 in his career) on the way to big win, over an even bigger rival.

One of those people, Jon Ciccone, had a performance that might have outshined anyone else in the NJAC division over the weekend, as the Wolpack running back carried the ball 24 times for a whopping 278 yards and three scores.

With eight minutes left to play in the fourth quarter, though, West Morris saw the score tied at 14-14. But a 1-yard touchdown score from Stephan Quatorze, along with a 24-yard TD scamper from Ciccone, sealed the late win for West Morris.

Defensively, West Morris was just as good as its offensive counterparts, as Tyler Amandos led the way with two fumble recoveries (one of which led to the Quatorze score), one interception and six tackles.

Simms Keeps Par Hills Rolling

Par Hills quarterback Tyler Simms has been playing well all season. But it’s his play over the past two weeks that have been particularly impressive as the senior has led his team to two-consecutive wins, the most recent a 14-7 win over Morris Knolls, according to NJ.com.

With Simms and the Viking offense firing on all cylinders, Par Hills lifted itself into third place in the American Division, as Simms once again took over.

While the running game struggled, gaining just 28 yards, the passing game was alive and well as Simms connected with three different receivers, threw two touchdowns and fell just short of the 200-yard mark (197 yards).

Receivers Mike Comerford, Dan Hardwick and Kyle Baxter reaped the benefits, as Comerford caught five balls for 77 yards and Hardwick and Baxter combined for six catches and 120 yards. Hardwick and Baxter each scored once.

Defensively, the Vikings adopted a bend-don’t-break mentality, allowing Knolls to rush for over 250 yards, but only score once.

In the deciding moment of the game, T.C. Panciello helped end a Knolls scoring chance with an interception in the end zone, sealing Par Hills’ fourth win of 2011.

Madison Wins 18th Straight

It was a battle of unbeaten Freedom Division rivals. But in the end it was Madison who would take control of the division, as the Dodgers earned a hard-fought 35-28 win over Lenape Valley on Friday night. For Madison, the win advances its streak of consecutive wins to an impressive 18-straight dating back to 2010.

As usual, the Dodgers handed Lenape a heavy dose of its rushing attack, carrying the ball 50 times over 300 yards. The two-headed rushing attack of Shone Register and quarterback Carson Lassiter combined for over 200 of those yards, reaching the end zone a combined five times.

The Dodgers failed to gain a single yard through the air, as all four of Lassiter’s pass attempts came up incomplete. But it wouldn’t matter, as an impressive fourth quarter goal line stand–highlighted by a Justin Goodwin pass breakup on a fourth down- was enough for Madison to improve to 5-0 in 2011.

For Lenape Valley, this is a loss that has got to sting. After being dominated by Madison 42-0 last season, the Patriots had themselves in position to win this game. Lenape, who finished with over 300 yards of total offense according to NJ.com, will look to rebound next week against a winless Morris Catholic team.

Top Performance of Week 6

Dover running back George Scalley may have single-handedly propelled the Tigers to a 34-21 win over Kinnelon on Friday night, but it wasn't solely fueled by the 157 yards rushing that he gained on 12 carries (although that certainly helped).

In what may have been the biggest moment for Dover on Friday night, Scalley seemingly outwitted everyone on the field, as second quarter punt that went untouched (and was being treated as a dead ball by everyone else on the field) was scooped up by Scalley and returned 65 yards for a touchdown, according to the Daily Record. The second quarter touchdown shot Dover out in front 21-6.

But Scalley didn't only impress with his legs, as the sophomore showed off his arm as well, connecting with receiver Kye Desimone for a 43-yard touchdown. Scalley also added nine tackles on defense.

Talk about an impressive performance.
