Police Warn Residents to Protect Themselves During Heat Advisory

Parsippany Police say residents can find relief at several area locations.

If you haven't been outside, let us warn you: the heat is brutal.

The National Weather Service has a heat advisory warning in place through 8 p.m. Tuesday, thanks to temperatures it says are 10-15 degrees higher than normal. For Parsippany, highs are expected to reach at least 95 degrees, with the heat index making it feel as if it's more than 100 degrees.

That means poor air quality and potential danger for young children, the elderly and people with respiratory conditions.

released the following list of tips to help Parsippany stay cool, healthy and safe in the heat:

  • Stay indoors in air conditioning as much as possible.
  • If you do go outside, stay in the shade.
  • Wear sunscreen outside, along with loose-fitting light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible.
  • Drink water regularly even if you are not thirsty. Limit alcohol and sugary drinks which speed dehydration.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in the car!
  • Avoid exertion during the hottest part of the day.
  • Take a cool shower or bath.
  • Check on the elderly and people with disabilities in your neighborhood who may need assistance keeping cool.
  • If your home is not air-conditioned, spend at least two hours daily at an air-conditioned mall or other public place.

Police announced that the township's cooling centers are open during their normal operating hours to help residents get relief from the blistering heat:
