AARP Tax Aides Ready to Help at PAL

Seniors are helping seniors get through tax season.

Seniors and others looking for tax help can find it at the . Volunteer AARP tax aides started their first day Friday morning and received a welcome from Mayor James Barberio.

The PAL Center is one of three Parsippany sites offering tax assistance through a partnership between the United Way of Northern New Jersey, the IRS, AARP, and other community organizations to provide free tax preparation from IRS-certified volunteers.

This free service is available only to families and individuals with a simple return (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, Schedules A & B).  The service is not applicable to businesses, stockholders, or landlords.

Gloria Nemecek is the tax aide in charge. A retired scientist with Novartis, she went back to school and earned her law degree from Rutgers Law School-Newark. The tax assistance program began as a pro bono project that was part of her academic coursework.

"I've had the experience of seeing people have trouble, deep trouble with the IRS as an attorney with the Rutgers Low Income Tax Clinic," Nemecek said. "Experienced help makes all the difference."

To get experienced help, call 2-1-1 to make an appointment.

The Lake Hiawatha Library will have tax volunteers available on selected Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (last appointment at 2:30): Feb.18, March 3, March 17, April 7 and April 14.

Program volunteers will be available at the Community Center on Tuesdays from  9 a.m.-1 p.m. through April 15. Electronic filing is available at this site.

Parsippany PAL also offers electronic filing. Tax help can be found here through April 15 on Fridays, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:30a.m.-2 p.m.
