Twp. Health Benefits on Council Agenda Monday

There's only one township meeting this week and it's a controversial one. Resolutions regarding health benefits for Township employees will be reconsidered and voted on Monday at a 7 p.m. meeting after coming to a stand still last Tuesday. 

The resolutions were halted when no one seconded Councilman Michael diPierro's motion to pass them.  President Brian Stanton called for a special meeting on Monday to award contracts to IDA and Delta Dental.

Mayor Jamie Barberio said in a letter to the Parsippany council last Thursday that he "was shocked and appalled when the Township Council failed to take action on these contracts, the effect of which is to discontinue health and dental benefits for all Township employees effective Jan. 1, 2014;" he added that he will be forced to "enter into emergency contracts with IDA and Delta Dental, forward those contracts to the State Comptroller’s Office on an expedited basis, and ask that office to approve these contracts to protect Township employees and taxpayers. A State takeover of the Township Council’s responsibility will be my only recourse if the members of the Township Council fail to do the job that they were elected to do.”

In Barberio's letter, he called out Councilmen Paul Carifi and Jonathan Nelson, saying that they have turned this into a "political issue." Since then, both have said in response to Barberio's letter that the mayor is a liar and that his threats are hollow.

Parsippany-Troy Hills Township Hall is closed Tuesday and Wednesday for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Parsippany-Troy Hills School District is closed through Jan. 1. School starts back up on Thursday, Jan. 2.
