The Lake Hiawatha Fire Department -- Fire District No. 4 -- has been serving the community since 1935. It operates with two engines, a ladder, a fire command vehicle and a support vehicle. The department is staffed by an all-volunteer crew of six officers, 25 firefighters and a chaplain.
Through the years, it has assisted residents in fires, floods, traffic accidents and other emergencies.
