Tourism commissioner says rental market is healthy.
Though immense devastation from Superstorm Sandy remains visible up and down the New Jersey coastline, beaches, boardwalks and even rental homes are ready for the annual influx of summer tourists that will begin this weekend, officials said Thursday at the annual "State of the Shore" event in Belmar. The State of the Shore report is presented by state officials and the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium every year before Memorial Day weekend kicks off, but this year it evolved to mark the unofficial reopening of the Shore area following Sandy. With emergency repairs to state and local infrastructure damaged by the storm now complete, work has started on the state's long term recovery, said Bob Martin, commissioner of the state Department of …

Tears of joy and sadness were shed by chorus members, music staff, alumni and even attending residents at the conclusion of a very emotional Parsippany Hills High School choir concert held on Wednesday, May 22. Before the high school choir members were able to take their final bow, Central Middle School Choir Teacher Adam Aguanno stole the spotlight to introduce a special surprise for retiring high school choir teacher Linda Clark. Clark has taught at Parsippany Hills on and off since 1973 and has touched the lives of each and every student she has taught over the years. Clark was astounded as choir alumni filed onto the stage, one by one in a seemingly endless parade of beaming smiles and a few tears. More than 100 of Clark's former …
Blackthorn Restaurant among dozens of New Jersey bars targeted by year-long investigation.
Details of a year-long investigation that ended Wednesday with dozens of bars' liquor seized, including bottles from Blackthorn Restaurant, were revealed by state Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa on Thursday. More than 1,000 bottles of booze were seized from 29 New Jersey bars by more than 100 state agents Wednesday at the conclusion of “Operation Swill,’’ authorities said. The investigation alleges that the bars and restaurants — a dozen TGI Friday's among them — filled premium alcoholic beverage bottles with cheaper alcohol in an attempt to fool customers and increase profits, authorities have said. Customers paid for the premium brand, but were instead poured a non-premium substitute, the release says. Acting on tips and consumer …

Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't …

Liquor was seized from Blackthorn Restaurant and about 30 other bars and restaurants throughout New Jersey Wednesday. The New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control, with the assistance of the Division of Criminal Justice, seized alcohol as part of "Operation Swill," and served demands for records from 29 licensed bars and restaurants throughout the state according to a release sent out by the state ABC. Firefighters quell Wednesday blaze.
Mount Tabor volunteer firefighters are ruling a Wednesday truck fire as accidental, citing vehicle failure as the cause of the blaze. Firefighters were called to Route 10 West and Powdermill Road at 12:37 p.m. Wednesday after a van towing a trailer burst into flames. By the time firefighters arrived, the entire van was engulfed in flames, particularly the engine and driver bays, Fire Department officials said. “The van was a total loss but the trailer was undamaged,” officials said. “Cans of gasoline were contained on the work trailer and in the van but were consistent with the business use of the vehicle.” The cause of the fire remains unknown but appears accidental in nature, saying it was “likely some failure of the vehicle,” they added…
Group hopes to heighten awareness of 10 sites in need of preservation funding.
A state historic preservation advocacy group released its list of the most endangered New Jersey sites Wednesday, detailing damage, some Superstorm-Sandy related, that has put 10 landmarks at risk for demolition. Properties that were classified as the "most endangered" have architectural and historic integrity with an identified threat and Preservation New Jersey, the organization that compiled the list, felt their inclusion could potentially help legislators realize the importance in preserving them. Included on the list is Morris County's Glen Alpin property in Harding Township. The Gothic Revival mansion is threatened by a need for sustainable use, according to Preservation New Jersey.
