A fantastic night featuring musical acts by Farewell Luna, Angelo DePuma and I Am Fighting took place last Friday at Parsippany High School. Effort is to help a 10-year-old Par-Troy child
One penny at a time, Parsippany schoolkids are making a difference at Northvail Elementary School, where students are participating in the "Pennies for Patients" Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraiser. Under the coordination of teacher Tracey Hedden, student council members, students, staff and families generously made contributions during the past several weeks totalling more than $3,000 again this year. Coming in first place was Mrs. McDougall’s fourth-grade class. Second-gradr Samantha Egger donated $110.00, the total sum of her personal savings. “Kids that have cancer need it more than I do,” she said. Roughly 33 pints of lifegiving blood were donated, said the company.
The Blood Center of New Jersey Bloodmobile was back in Parsippany Tuesday to accept donations from community members. The converted bus made a stop at medical website MD Online's Par-Troy headquarters for the company's first-ever employee blood drive. Gym partnered with the Blood Center of New Jersey in an effort to save lives.
Anytime Fitness saw a steady stream of people come forward to give the gift of life during its Spring Blood Drive, held Thursday at the Tabor Road gym. Patch was one of the many who donated blood for the Blood Center of New Jersey, and it was terribly rewarding and practically painless. "It's about giving back to the community," said the fitness center's co-owner, Eric Skovronek. "Giving blood saves lives." Alicia Savage, the phelebotomist who drew our blood, said donors are needed every day for patients in New Jersey hospitals who need lifesaving transfusions. On March 27, sub shop makes big push to benefit Garden State Boys and Girls Clubs.
The Parsippany Jersey Mike's Subs franchise on Smith Road is giving back again. The famously philanthropic chain is in the midst of its annual March Month of Giving event, which nationally benefits 86 separate charities. One of the charities is the Boys and Girls Clubs of New Jersey. Throughout the month of March, individuals can donate to the organization at the Jersey Mike's Subs shop in Parsippany. Thousands of at-risk children, seniors, and developmentally disabled individuals will have access to dental care this year thanks to $700,000 in grants awarded to 28 community organizations and programs in New Jersey and Connecticut by the Delta Dental of New Jersey Foundation. The foundation is the charitable arm of Parsippany-based Delta Dental of New Jersey. A goal of the grants is to reduce the number of complex and urgent dental work resulting from the lack of preventive care, catching problems earlier to reduce complications later. The funds are designed to help the uninsured and underserved, specifically children whose families are at or below the federal poverty level, the developmentally disabled, and vulnerable seniors. For Morris Plains' Farewell Luna—aka musician Jared Wohl—the superstorm was personal, and so is his contribution toward rebuilding New Jersey.
Parsippany's Jared Wohl was rocked by the devastation wrought by Superstorm Sandy last October. "This was the first natural disaster that really affected me personally," said the Morris Plains neighborhood resident, who is the lone member of musical project Farewell Luna. "I had plans to travel to Las Vegas to record my latest single, 'Momentary Angel' along with some of my other songs, and it just so happened to be shortly after Sandy had occurred. I couldn't have imagined the destruction that the disaster had caused. "It really hit close to home—no pun intended," he said. Morris Plains' Interfaith Food Pantry will honor individuals and groups that helped feed the needy.
The Interfaith Food Pantry in Morris Plains will host a dedication ceremony Monday, March 8 at 11:30 a.m. to pay tribute to those whose donations for its 2012 capital campaign led to a whopping take of $2.7 million. The organization will unveil its 2012 Annual Giving Tree to mark the end of its Harvesting Miracles campaign, which paid for construction of the IFP's new resource center at 2 Executive Drive, which opened in November 2011. The giving tree, to be displayed in the resource center lobby, features the names of approximately 185 groups and individuals that contributed 1,000 pounds of food or $2,000 or more between January and December of 2012. Community service group donates $2,000 to fight pediatric cancer.
Parsippany's Sons of Italy chapter is stepping up again to do its part to fight children's cancers. At its Wednesday night meeting, group President Joseph Jannarone Jr. presented member Ralph Rocco and his family with $2,000 to support a walking team called Bella's Bunch. The group is a visible and vocal force in raising money to help the Valerie Fund, a charity whose website says it provides “support for the focused comprehensive health care of children with cancer and blood disorders.” The fund was established in 1976 by Ed and Sue Goldstein in memory of their daughter Valerie after her battle with cancer.
