Comedy, Music & Lots of Sondheim on Stage

Area theater lovers can see two shows by the legendary composer in the coming weeks

The works of Stephen Sondheim are among the most challenging in theater, but the great composer obviously isn't intimidating area theater groups. Dover Little Theater is currently staging "Company," Sondheim's groundbreaking 1970 classic about a single man in three relationships. The show is known as one of the first that deals with realistic adult themes, and features such songs as "Being Alive." Meanwhile, The Barn Theatre will present "Assassins," with a run opening May 18. The 1990 musical is about the men and women who either assassinated, or tried to assassinate, presidents of the United States. And even if you don't like Sondheim, there's bound to be something for everyone on a stage near you, from "Cabaret," to "Southern Comforts" …

Robin Fox Brings the Funny on Her Terms [VIDEO]

Bridgewater housewife showcases her comedy stylings at Parsippany's Mount Halloran Towne Tavern Wednesday.

For more than 17 years, Robin Fox was a housewife with a dream: She wanted to be a stand-up comedian.  "I'd wanted to do comedy for more than 20 years, but that vanished when I got married and had a baby at 30," Fox recalls over the phone from her home in Bridgewater. "I was the mom cracking jokes at the PTO." By taking a gamble, Fox made that dream come true. Now, the Cranford native performs at clubs in New York, entertaining crowds on the lucrative corporate comedy circuit and bringing the funny at bridal and baby showers. And Wednesday, the in-demand jokester will make a stop at the Mount Halloran Towne Tavern in Parsippany's Lake Hiawatha on Wednesday night.  Usually, weekly comedy nights at the Towne Tavern feature comedians just …

Jim Breuer: I Marked Road Trips by Metal Albums

The SNL alum and Morris County resident performs Aug. 27 at The Community Theatre.

For many, road trips tend to be measured in hours, or perhaps the number of states driven through. For comedian Jim Breuer, many were measured by the heavy metal albums he listened to on the way. In his 2010 book I'm Not High (But I've Got a Lot of Crazy Stories about Life as a Goat Boy, a Dad, and a Spiritual Warrior), he notes a trip to Washington, D.C., was measured "in two [Queensryche] Operation: Mindcrimes' and one [Metallica] ... And Justice For All." "I was a huge Queensryche fan," Breuer said, noting his disappointment he was unable to see them perform locally at The Community Theatre on Aug. 3, because he was going to be performing in Germany. "Operation: Mindcrime, I listened to it 10,000 times," he said. The Long Island native …

Jim Breuer is not only a very funny comedian, but he also the type of guy who would give you the shirt off his back. He was always willing to donate his time to helping others. He gave my wife and I tickets to see him at the Nokia Theater in Times square, and we had a great time. Thanks Jim-Andy & Allison Diamond   more ›
