Top prize is $7,000 at the finals, which take place June 22 on Jenkinson's Boardwalk.
Two Parsippany fitness athletes are among the competitors who last Saturday won the right to compete in the finals at the SuperFit Championships on the Jersey Shore. Tracey Magee and Kyle Baluyot, representing Parsippany's Surge CrossFit on New Road, were among the participants in the SuperFit Championships, a series of intense qualifying fitness competitions. The final qualifying event was held at the Morristown National Guard Armory. Magee and Baluyot placed in the competition and now move on to the championships at Jenkinson’s Beach on the Boardwalk on June 22, where the final ‘SuperFitters’ will vie for a $7,000 prize purse. At the final qualifier, men and women competed in three fitness events: a timed burpee-box jump and slam ball …

Strap on your pedometer, grease up your baby stoller and hit the road for a workout that will take your breath away!
As the deputy editor of FITNESS Magazine, Mary Anderson has her finger on the pulse of the latest workout trends. But what she really craves is running outdoors. “It’s just not the same on a treadmill—I get inspired by the outdoors, whereas I cover the treadmill’s digital readout with my towel!” In our Patch Takes It Off challenge, we have found similar results—running on a treadmill or riding an elliptical makes us bored and easily tired, yet running or riding a bicycle among the trees makes us feel exhilarated. There is a reason for this: Fitness experts widely agree that seeing greenery while working out reduces stress and can improve performance. Yet only 22 percent of women exercise outside of the gym, according to a recent Women’s …

Jonathan Nelson voted neither yes nor no to a plan to add a waiver process to the anti-stacking law, but he says he had good reason to abstain.
The amendment to the township's maximum occupancy ordinance, approved by the Township Council on Feb. 12, gave Councilman Jonathan Nelson a great deal of pause, he said. Three members of the governing body voted in favor of the Barberio admnistration proposal, which imposes limits on how long guests can stay in tenants' rental units and sets up a waiver process to protect families having new babies and tenants with legitimate reasons to run afoul of the ordinance-mandated occupancy limit. Councilmember Paul Carifi Jr., who ran for office as a staunch opponent of so-called stacking, voted no. Nelson made a decision to abstain. He told Patch he had strong reason for doing so. The councilman said he was opposed to what was proposed and …

Planning to run a 5k? Here are key training tips and strategies from an expert personal trainer and running specialist.
Training for a 5K is a great way to boost your cardiovascular health, reduce stress or simply add more running to your routine. And with the end of summer's temperatures (slowly) becoming more manageable, this is the perfect time. Luckily, Parsippany is a great place to prepare, with trails at Mountain Way Park (for those who like a little rugged with their run; be careful after Sept. 8, when deer season opens) and the track at Parsippany Hills High School. A 5K, or 3.1 miles, is perfect for beginners, but it does take some training to gain the endurance to go the distance. Raina Hafer, NCSF, certified personal trainer and running specialist, shares her shape-up tips for success. Commit to a Race. Many local charities and organizations …

New effort will help a local school and can show the benefits of exercise.
An area gym is launching a new effort designed to support a Parsippany school and boost business while promoting healthier lifestyles. The PTA Challenge is the brainchild of Anytime Fitness at 1004 Tabor Road. Co-owner Eric Skovronek said the program targets the Parent-Teacher Associations of Mount Tabor, Littleton and Lake Parsippany elementary schools. "For each person who mentions your school when they join, Anytime Fitness will donate $20 to your PTA and give the new member a bonus month of membership," Skovronek said. "This offer applies to anyone—parents, family, friends, neighbors, teachers, etc.—who mentions your school. "The school that has the most new members join Anytime Fitness will receive a free cup of yogurt at YoFresh …

Moms, nannies and kids aplenty came to move, hop, dance and get fit at Parsippany PAL event
More than 100 visitors from Parsippany and other New Jersey towns were on hand for the Mommy and Me Move It! event at the Police Athletic League Center Thursday morning. The day of music, dancing, exercise, games and fun was sponsored by NJ Playgrounds and NJ Kids Online. All proceeds went to benefit the PAL. And what fun it was! Patch attended the event and had a blast. We received lots of little-kid hugs, made friends with a Burmese python named (appropriately enough) Patches, rediscovered a love for juice boxes, played a little hoops and took lots of photos. Take a look at the great time had by all.

Our hero shakes things up with roller skating and the unforbidden dance.
Variety, they say, is the spice of life. That's certainly my experience in the Patch Takes It Off challenge. Give me a repetitive physical movement to do and five minutes later, I will be bored by it. Many health and fitness experts say I am not all that uncommon. Fitness author Mark Sisson, who wrote weight-loss tome The Primal Blueprint, said changing one's exercise routine is "pretty darn integral" to losing weight, "both in terms of keeping your mind engaged in the activity at hand and ensuring that your dedication to exercise continues to pay off, be it in gains of physical strength, endurance, or simply just feeling good about your body. From the beginning of this adventure, I envisioned mixing a regular regimen–traditional …

A new approach leads to positive results.
Wow! What a difference a week (and a major change in mindset) can make. Have I made progress? Absolutely! Have I attained perfection? Not even close! But overall, I am really pleased (thrilled, actually) with how things have gone since last Wednesday. When I stepped on the scale this morning, I was down two pounds from last week. The freedom of breaking free from the confines of a strict diet is exhilarating! Instead of telling myself “no, you can’t eat this, it’s not on your diet”, I allowed myself to eat what I want in a reasonable portion as long as I sit down and am not distracted by something. For a girl who likes to snack while watching "The Real Housewives of New Jersey," this was a major change in nighttime habits. It took…

Nelson is a sissy. Between his actions, or lack thereof since talk is cheap, and the company he keeps, he will be forever remembered as the councilman who had the chance, but never did.   more ›
