A weak storm front expected to bring up to two inches of snow starting Monday night.
Cross your fingers. As of Sunday, weather projections indicate a storm front entering the region that could give us—gasp—a white Christmas. According to the National Weather Service, there is a 20 percent chance of snow on Tuesday, with a temperature ultimately reaching 38 degrees. Stephen Pellettiere, with Ion Weather based at the Morristown Municipal Airport, said current projections appear to have the small storm begin producing at about 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve, tapering off at the latest 6 a.m. Tuesday morning. "A little storm is passing to our south," he said. "There's a tenth of an inch of moisture, which translates to about an inch of snow." Some areas, including southern Morris County, could see as much as two inches of the white …

That's a lot of toys. The Morris County Park Police have again led an effort seeking donations and distributing toys for children of all ages in need for the holidays. Once known as “Saddle Up for Toys,” a program began in 2002 by Sgt. Timmy Albine has grown into a massive annual donation program. This season, in memory of Albine, the toy drive has been renamed the “Timmy Albine Memorial Toy Drive." Now, in its 10th year, over 4,200 toys were collected and are now being distributed throughout Morris County and areas of New Jersey hit by Hurricane Sandy. With the assistance of Morris County residents, Morris County Park Commission, the Republican National Headquarters, Morristown-Beard School, and Exxon’s Retired Executives program, the …
No meat, no dairy, no problem!
Whether you shape your holiday cookies in Christmas wreaths or Hanukkah dreidles, there's no denying that in December, dessert is the main event. Well, that and shopping, of course! The first time my aunt attempted to make a vegan holiday dessert, we all couldn't help but laugh at the outcome. She followed the recipe for "dessert balls," but they tasted more like desert balls—dry, flaky, leaving your mouth absolutely begging for water. That was back in December 2008. She Googled vegan desserts, and combed through a handful of recipes before landing on the famous peanut-butter dessert balls. Today, a Google search for "vegan desserts" returns more cookies, pies, bars and cakes than one could make in a year. I've followed a few over the …

With day care center and youth programs in "dire jeopardy," Salvation Army’s "Morristown Corps.," located on Spring Street, is turning to neighbors for help. "As our nation continues to endure deep economic impacts, more and more families are seeking extraordinary assistance," said Morristown Corp. spokesperson Jasmin Sacarello in a press release. The Salvation Army has a responsibility, she said, to continue providing resources which include childcare programs (for infants, toddlers, preschool, and school-age children); on-site food pantries; emergency homeless shelters, for women and children; shelters for men; and shelters for families. Major Walter L. Droz noted in the press release, "that with the advent of natural disasters and the …

Don't know what to buy a loved one? Save the cash and get cooking.
The winter-holiday season is among my favorite times of the year. It's amazing how much joy comes from seeing twinkling lights on a tree, from feeling the warmth that emanates from a nearby menorah, from hearing Christmas carols sung by a passionate chorale, from experiencing anew the wonder for a baby's birth 2000-odd years ago. And of course there is the glow on children's faces—there is nothing like seeing a kid gorging herself on candy gelt, anticipating a visit from Santa or running through a field covered in wintry white. Accompanying these magnificent joys is one proclaimed in an old adage: It's better to give than to receive. Don't get me wrong: I love getting presents as much as the next guy. (Again: I enjoy receiving gifts as …

Enjoy these terrific recipes to make your Festival of Lights celebrating extra special.
When one thinks of Hanukkah eating, the thought usually goes to the traditional: yummy potato latkes, crisp apple fritters, cookies and sweets and the myriad varieties of Sufganiyot (doughnuts). But dishes served to celebrate the annual Jewish Festival of Lights encompass so much more. Here are some terrific recipes we've tried and adored. These delicacies offer a miraculous way to wish your family and friends Ah Lichtige Hanukkah... a bright Hanukkah. We could eat this all day and all year long (and, in fact, we do!): This traditional golden brown Jewish egg bread is light and fluffy, rich and beautiful, making it perfect for Hanukkah feasts. This delicious recipe comes from A Taste of Home. Coming from the Sephardic tradition, this salad…

Time. Money. Peace of mind. These things all seem a distant memory in the face of the things that stress us: the economy, our jobs, recovering from Hurricane Sandy, the crush of the upcoming holiday season. Where can you go to lay these burdens down? On Saturday and Sunday from 4:30 until 8 p.m., St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Parsippany will offer its 23rd annual Live Nativity. Time? It only takes a few moments. A 15-minute narrative telling of the Nativity Story is read continuously under a deep blue star-lit night sky over Bethlehem. As guests lay their burdens down in the manger, the shepherds journey to Bethlehem to see the Messiah announced by the angels, and Wise Men travel from the East to lay their own burdens and gifts before…

Chrismukkah starts with the first night of Hanukkah and lasts until Christmas Day or the final night of Hanukkah, whichever comes later.
It can be easy to miss the spirit of goodwill that is supposed to accompany the winter holidays, what with all the fighting going on. No, I don't mean the folks coming to blows over iPad Minis at Black Friday sales. I'm talking about those determined to impose their limited view of the season on others, the grinches who have a hard time with sincere wishes like "Seasons Greetings" or "Happy Holidays." Now, if I know you specifically celebrate Christmas, I'll gladly wish you Merry Christmas. But please don't tell me what or how I'm allowed to celebrate. This past weekend, while shopping for a new menorah, I had a really odd encounter. An elderly man spied me as he searched for Christmas cards—he was surprised to see me assessing the merits …
