'Frankenstorm' has potential to even bring snow to higher elevations.
No two storms are alike, and Hurricane Sandy is as unique as they come, according to one meteorologist. As the late October hurricane continued to wind its way through the Caribbean Friday morning, already leaving 22 dead in its wake, the National Weather Service says Sandy will begin to impact northern New Jersey late Monday into Tuesday. Hurricane Sandy’s track is still on target to batter portions of the mid-Atlantic, according to meteorologist David Stark, but will likely be most damaging in Delaware and Southern New Jersey. “Points north and west (of Delaware and southern New Jersey) will feel the northern side of the storm,” Stark said. “That includes tropical storm winds, but it could be sustained for a longer period of time due to …

Morris County OEM advises families to establish emergency and evacuation plans.
While Hurricane Sandy may be making its way to the northeast, Morris County officials have begun to prepare for the storm which is anticipated to impact the area late Monday into Tuesday. "The likelihood of the storm affecting our area has increased significantly over the past 24 hours," according to a letter sent to emergency officials throughout the county Thursday by Jeff Paul, the director of the Morris County Office of Emergency Management. Paul said "flash flooding is extremely likely" and it is possible that record-level flooding will occur. Rainfall could total more than 5 inches and winds could reach speeds of 70 mph or higher. As of 11 a.m. Thursday, Paul said the hurricane was traveling north at a speed of 20 mph with winds of …

Some Par-Troy residents are still without electricity, but utility crews are hard at work to change that.
PSE&G reports that as of 5 p.m., 74,000 New Jersey residents are still lacking electric service following the hurricane. The company appears to making headway, though power has been restored to about 670,000 customers since Sunday and company spokesperson Karen Johnson said substantial progress has been made during the past 48 hours. According to PSE&G, Irene has created the greatest number of outages in the company’s history in terms of outages. The company expects restoration of all customers within the next 4 to 6 days. Utility company JCP&L, which presents individual town outage totals, reports that 455 of its Parsippany customers remain without power as of a6:08 p.m., according to its online outage map. Crews for both workers are …

The Category 3 hurricane is expected to hit our area late Saturday or early Sunday.
Consider Friday the calm before the storm. Accuweather meteorologists warn that Hurricane Irene could be a "once-in-50-year hurricane for the northeast." The National Weather Service reports that the Category 3 hurricane has 115 mph winds that extend outward up to 80 miles from the center plus tropical storm force winds extending outward up to 290 miles. After battering the Bahamas, NWS forecasters say it likely will pass well offshore of Florida--during which time it could gain strength--and hit North Carolina on Saturday. The NWS reports New Jersey could meet Irene late Saturday, with the bulk of tropical storm force winds and rain hitting the Garden State Sunday. This could result in "at least minor to locally moderate damage," …

Marina owner says to get boats out of the water or tie them down.
John Salamone was working on his friend's boat Thursday when it hit him. "Scott," the owner of Johnny's Marina in Hopatcong said. "I'm not putting your boat back in the water." Salamone's reasoning was simple: With Hurricane Irene barreling up the East Coast and heading for New Jersey, causing Gov. Chris Christie to declare a state of emergency, it wouldn't make sense to put his friend's prized possession at risk. And with nearby Lake Parsippany and boat-loving residents in the township, it makes sense to ensure that watercraft is protected during the storm. Salamone gave Patch some tips for boaters as Hurricane Irene nears. GET IT OUT You can stop reading if you follow this step. Salamone said boaters can save lots of headaches—and money—…

Officials are urging residents to begin preparing as early as Thursday.
Hurricane Irene, a now-Category 3 hurricane as designated by the National Weather Service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is expected to possibly hit our area Sunday afternoon and evening, with the storm continuing into Monday morning. Local police departments across the state of New Jersey have begun warning residents to prepare early for the storm, which may cause electrical damage, damaged trees, high winds and flooding. "Meteorologists are calling this hurricane one of the most significant weather events to hit the east coast of the United States in decades. They are recommending that people begin taking action immediately to prepare for significant damage caused by high wind and flooding rain," the Denville …
Now pummeling the Bahamas, Hurricane Irene could hit northern New Jersey Saturday or Sunday.
Hurricane Irene—presently a category three hurricane bombarding the Bahamas with rain and gusty winds—could roll into northern New Jersey late this weekend, if National Weather Service projections hold. The National Hurricane Center says Irene may hit New Jersey late Saturday or Sunday, with the storm potentially still at hurricane strength when it passes through. As of 11 p.m. Wednesday, Irene's maximum sustained winds were at 120 mph, with hurricane force winds extending up to 40 miles from the center. The storm is expected to intensify, perhaps even achieving category four status, as it makes its way through the north-northwest and then moves north today. No warnings were in effect for the U.S. mainland as of this morning, but the …
