Tips for Finding a Tax Preparer

Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, based in Parsippany, says new tax laws make it a good idea to ditch the DIY approach and hire a pro to help with your 1040.

Approximately 60 percent of U.S. citizens enlist the help of a paid tax professional to file their income tax returns, according to the Internal Revenue Service. And Parsippany-based Jackson Hewitt Tax Service says the passage of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 may lead more people to seek out a professional. Mark Steber, Jackson Hewitt's chief tax officer, says working with a paid preparer can make a difference. It's Better to Give, But Give Carefully

Parsippany tax service company offers tips for people giving charitable gifts for the holidays.

'Tis the season for giving to family, friends, loved ones and especially people in need.   Despite continued economic challenges, 2010 saw a 4 percent increase in charitable giving, according to a report by the Giving USA Foundation . The philanthropic research group claims the upward trend is expected to continue this year. While more people are giving to charities, many are unsure of how to properly record and claim charitable donations on tax returns. NJ.com: Parsippany's Jackson Hewitt Files for Bankruptcy

The tax preparation company anticipates being free from court protection in 60 days.

Parsippany-based Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, according to NJ.com. The tax preparation firm is under scrutiny by U.S. regulators over the company's participation in tax refund anticipation loans. Jackson Hewitt reported having $500 million assets and debts  and said it has made an arrangement with secured lenders that will let the firm exit court protection within 60 days. A Chapter 11 bankruptcy code permits financially troubled businesses to reorganize and continue operating. For the full story, click here.
