Sandy interrupted its grand opening, but things are full steam ahead for new Lake Hiawatha bakery.
The official grand opening and ribbon-cutting for the CakeOver, a new bakery now open on North Beverwyck Road was held Oct. 23. Afterward, the family-owned business was supposed to spring to life. But then came interruptions: Superstorm Sandy and the nor'easter Athena. With weather adventures over, at least for the present, the new establishment focuses on getting to business—and helping Parsippany get to know the CakeOver. The new bakery is not your average cake and cookie concern: The CakeOver is the first gluten-free and specialty bakery to open its doors in Parsippany. Don't let the hyphenation scare you. “You do not have to be gluten-free to enjoy the free samples and the desserts the bakery has to offer," said Alison Teperman, the …

My neighbors and I are experiencing a repeat of what happened to us last year after the October snowstorm knocked out our power. That is, we watched the surrounding area in lower Hiawatha get power back street by street until the effort abruptly stopped with the residents of Seminole Avenue. Not until three or four days after the entire area was powered on did we get ours back as well. Why? The only thing I can think of is that we have the unfortunate circumstance of being on the same part of the grid as Volunteers Park, and why would any reasonable person think that providing electricity to a park is a priority? We're not asking for any special considerations. What we do want is to be treated just like our neighbors around us and …

'You don't hear about that kind of thing happening here,' one area merchant said.
Those who live and work in the area of Lake Hiawatha's Kazumi Sushi restaurant, where authorities say a woman was stabbed to deathby her husband, remained stunned on Saturday. Steve Conte, owner of Funnybooks Comics and Stuff, which sits aross North Beverwyck Road from the crime scene, said the incident is out of character for the neighborhood. "You don't hear about that kind of thing happening here," he said. "Here, you see robberies, burglaries. But a murder? I am just shocked and sad." The Morris County Prosecutor's Office said Parsippany resident Jiu Jian Zheng, 42, was charged with first-degree murder and weapons offenses in the killing of his 34-year-old wife, Yun Fei Lin. Conte said he did not know the couple, who also lived in …

A township truck accidentally knocked down live electrical wires on Tioga Avenue.
Parsippany Police and Jersey Central Power and Light dealt with a potentially dangerous situation Wednesday afternoon. Live wires were accidentally knocked down on Tioga Avenue, where a township road milling and paving project is underway. Power had to be shut off in the neighborhood for a time to allow utility crews to repair the damage. Police said a contractor's dump truck involved in the road project accidentally ran into the electrical wires, bringing them down. No one was injured in the incident, police said. But someone could have been, if not for good luck, said a township road inspector. "The wires got stuck on the dump truck, so a guy in the truck grabbed a rake to knock the wires off of it," said Salvatore Poccia. "I ran out, …

Belleville resident receives five years probation, community service for Parsippany incident.
A Belleville man charged with attempted murder for stabbing his wife's boyfriend 14 times in a Parsippany-based crime of passion won't be going to prison. On Friday State Superior Court Judge Stuart Minkowitz sentenced Angelo Corino, 61, to five years probation, 640 hours of community service, anger management therapy and paying $13,973 for the victim's out-of-pocket medical expenses, the Daily Record reported. The sentence was the state living up to its end of the plea deal struck with Corino in June. That outcome is a bit different than what was expected. According to the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, Corino pled guilty to one count of third-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and in exchange would serve 364 days in the …

Drownings can happen in only a few inches of water. Heed these safety tips to protect your loved ones.
With the intense heat in northern New Jersey over the past few weeks, many Parsippany residents have taken to the water. After all, swimming is a good way to cool down, lots of fun and very good exercise, and with the Lake Hiawatha Swim Club , the beaches of Lake Parsippany, the Lakeland Hills YMCA pool and community, hotel and private swim clubs and pools in and near the township, there are plenty of options for practicing your crawl or backstroke. However, every year fatal drownings and close calls traumatize families. Last year 25 drowning incidents involving kids under 15 happened in the week of June 30 to July 6, according to USA Swimming, the national governing body for the sport. In 2010 there were 24 such incidents. The U.S. …

Power has been restored.
JCP&L reports that Parsippany homes that lost power Monday night due to downed wires on Minnehaha Boulevard in Lake Hiawatha have all had electricity restored. It is believed that only homes on Minnehaha were affected. Sgt. Allan Griffin of the Parsippany Township Police Department said last night that it appeared outages did not spread to surrounding areas. The police received the initial call that wires were down around 8 p.m. and as of 9 p.m., the police and firefighters were still waiting for Jersey Central Power & Light to begin fixing the wires, said Griffin. Griffin said that it appeared a blown transformer caused the outage. Let Patch save you time. Get local stories like this delivered right to your inbox or smartphone each day …
