Patch users vote costumed pup as Top Dog in the region.
Wendel the Wonder Dog is not only a caped crusader. He's also a Top Dog. Wendel, an Italian Greyhound mixed-breed dog, was found as a stray with his brother, Preston, when he was four months old. The pup was named Patch's Top Dog after making it through two rounds of voting in our contest. We asked users to submit photos of their dogs on participating sites, then vote for their favorites. Wendel received 42 votes on Long Valley Patch and the most votes in our regional round on all participating sites. Wendel is pictured in a pint-sized Batman costume, showing a facial expression like he is more than ready to fight crime-or take a nap. According to the user who submitted the photo of Wendel, Justin Hardin, the pooch is "the happiest dog you…

Anytime Fitness is having fun with a contest surrounding its best friend, Luna.
Every fitness center has a unique characteristic. Maybe it’s a particular personal trainer or instructor. Maybe it has your favorite piece of equipment. Could it be that wannabe body builder who keeps looking at himself or herself in the mirror? Anytime Fitness at 1004 Tabor Road has its own something unique: a mascot named Luna. Luna is a 1-year old rescue mutt from Georgia. Her owners (and owners of Anytime Fitness), Eric and Dodi Skovronek, found her at The Last Resort when she was just a pup and she’s been coming to the gym ever since. "The members love her," said Eric Skovronek. "Many have made a dog pat one of the first things they do when they get to the gym." Luna tags along during the cleaning routine in the morning and then hangs…

Caldwell College students were treated to a little stress relief during final exams when pet therapy dogs visited campus on Wed. Dec.12. The Director of the college’s Counseling Center, Robin Davenport, director of the college's Counseling Center, said having pet therapy dogs on campus during finals week has become a popular attraction for Caldwell College students. "Studies show that petting a dog is very calming and can lower blood pressure, relax the muscles and lower the heart rate," she said. "The effect that the dogs have on students is visible as you witness their tense expressions turn to wide smiles.” This is the third year in a row that the college brought the dogs to campus during finals week. The dogs were from Therapy Dogs…
Candlelight vigil held Tuesday night at Veterans Park elicits tears, tributes and a call for an end to the violence.
More than 100 residents gathered at Veterans Park Tuesday night to offer respects to the 20 children and six adults gunned down Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Parsippany's Par-Troy Council of Parent-Teacher Associations candlelight vigil was the brainchild of Parsippany Hills High School PTSA President Sandy Nussbaum Giercyk. "I had to do something," she said, when asked why she suggested putting on an outdoor event to allow Parsippany residents to stand in solidarity with the Newtown fallen. "My emotions have run the gamut, from love to hate to guilt," Giercyk said, addressing the crowd at the park's bandshell. "This tragedy leaves us with a reminder that life is very fragile." Elizabeth Kadian, also of the Par-…

Area musician who had a liver transplant earlier this year plans benefit concert to help other patients.
Event will be held Tuesday night at Veterans Park.
The Par-Troy Council of Parent-Teacher Associations will honor the memory of those lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Friday morning's deadly shooting in Connecticut. Parsippany residents are asked to gather Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Veterans Park off Route 46. Organizer Sandy Nussbaum Giercyk said the idea behind the event is to offer solace to those who are grieving and to pay respects to the fallen. "As the events of Friday unfolded it was horrific and gutwrenching to everyone," Giercyk told Patch. "I couldn't get past the fact it was kindergarten children. Innocent 6-year-olds. As a parent it was simply heartbreaking. "All you want to do is grab your kids and never leave home if even a kindergarten room isn't a safe place." With …

Friends of Marty will boost the number of students eligible to receive scholarships in 2014.
Parsippany resident Martin Boryczewski lives on in the hearts of his friends more than 11 years after he was lost in the September 11 attacks in New York City. And in 2014, community service efforts launched in his honor will expand, according to his best friend. Since Boryczewski's untimely passing, the nonprofit Friends of Marty Inc. has hosted an annual golf outing that raises funds for deserving students at his alma mater Morris Catholic High School. And now, more students will have a chance to receive scholarships. "In 2014, we will expand our award scholarship funds to students at St. Peter’s University where Marty also excelled," said Ron Dollard, who heads Friends of Marty. "From the beginning, we’ve chosen to help students in need…
