Citing safety concerns, citizen activists are calling on residents to raise their voices to have the NJDOT construction staging site closed.
Residents near Parsippany's Route 202 are expressing anger over the New Jersey Department of Transportation's $73 million major Interstate 80 roadway rehabilitation project. Specifically, the citizens are upset that DOT officials hired Union Paving Construction Co. of Mountainside to clear trees from an area at the juncture of Littleton and Marcella roads for the purpose of creating a staging site for the rehab effort. "The area is a heavy traveled corridor now," said an outraged Mary Purzycki, who lives nearby. "It will be impossible for area residents or any driver to travel this corridor safely once the staging area is operational." Overnight lane closures are needed to remove concrete safety barrier and restore Interstate 80 over northbound Interstate 287 and Smith Road, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced Friday. NJDOT’s contractor, Sparwick Contracting, has completed reconstruction work on the I-80 bridges in both directions at this location, on schedule, according to transportation officials. To facilitate the removal of the concrete safety barrier, the department will utilize double and triple-lane closures on I-80 in each direction Friday until 6 a.m. and on Saturday. The New Jersey Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced a regional maintenance resurfacing and roadway repair project in Morris and Union counties. Beginning this week, NJDOT will mill and repave deteriorated sections of asphalt and concrete roadway at several locations in the two counties, including these on Morris: Additionally, work will be done on different spots of Routes 24 and 124 between Springfield, Millburn and Chatham. The approximately $10 million contract will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway at each location, including all travel lanes, turn lanes, shoulders and median openings. Upcoming traffic pattern shifts on the Interstate 80 bridges over Interstate 287 northbound and Smith Road in both directions in Parsippany were announced today by the NJDOT. The new construction zones in both directions of the highway will be set up this weekend. Lanes will be closed overnight in each direction Friday and Saturday night to implement the new patterns. They are expected to be in place by noon on Sunday, according to the NJDOT. Once the new construction zones are in place, three travel lanes will be maintained on the eastbound side during daytime and peak period hours, split around either side of the work zone. On Friday, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced new traffic pattern shifts on I-80 in both directions over I-287 northbound and Smith Road in Parsippany. New construction zones will go up in the center lane of I-80 in both directions this weekend. The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced Thursday that Interstate 80 westbound Exit 47 off-ramp to Route 46 westbound, as well as the Route 46 westbound shoulder in Parsippany, will be closed Friday night for milling and paving work. According to a release by NJDOT, variable message signs will direct motorists destined for Route 46 westbound to use Exit 48 for Hook Mountain Road south to Route 46 westbound in Montville. Rockfall mitigation operations along Interstate 80 eastbound in Montville will begin on Saturday that will cause off-peak lane closures, as well as possible full roadway closures, according to a release from the New Jersey Department of Transportation. NJDOT will close a .4-mile stretch of the right shoulder between mileposts 47.5 and 47.9 to establish a construction zone adjacent to the highway. At the same time, the right shoulder along I-80 westbound in the same location will be reopened after similar construction activity was completed. Littleton Rd. is just the most wrong place to put a staging area. It is slow moving and time consuming to use Littleton now, can you imagine what it will be like to travel on Littleton when you are constantly sharing the road with heavy equipment moving back and forth from the work site.
