The Occupy Wall Street movement entered what is promising to be the most contentious day yet on Thursday. Demonstrators have vowed to "shut down Wall Street," blocking traffic on major roadways leading to the financial district. Police have already arrested some protestors who were sitting, blocking traffic. The crowd was reportedly chanting "all day, all week, shut down Wall Street." The newest developments come after the city and park owners had tents and sleeping bags removed on Tuesday. Demonstrators have vowed to block traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge, among other avenues to the financial center. As the day's events unfold, we ask you: are protestors going to far? Occupy Wall Street, a series of demonstrations that began in New York City's Zuccotti Park on Sept. 17, is a protest against corporate greed and social and economic inequality as well as corporate America's influence on government laws and policies. Though the movement has been criticized for lack of leadership, by last week similar protests popped up in over 70 cities around the country. Parsippany has both McMansions and food pantries. Should the next protest be staged at Smith Field?
The Occupy Wall Street Movement continues, as disenfranchised Americans meet up, team up and speak up about what they see as the inequities of our country. Calling themselves the 99 Percent, the protestors express concerns about big business’ impact on politics. Yesterday marked the beginning of a week-long protest in the Journal Square area of Jersey City. Living in Parsippany, within Morris County (the eighth wealthiest county in the U.S.), in a town with a median household income of $86,013, versus the national average of $55,970, this issue is relevant to us. As a self employed individual, my effective tax rate for federal and state is 40%, I think it would be "fair" if everyone paid the same effective rate. Government wants to waste 40% of what I make, they should waste 40% of what you make.   more ›
