An officer's quick response put out a car fire before it could spread.
A Parsippany Police Officer's quick response helped quell a car fire after it burst into flames on Monday. Ptl. Thomas Dinkelspiel was patrolling the area near Smith Field on Baldwin Road around 7:30 p.m. when he saw a blue BMW pull into the park completely filled with smoke, said Parsippany Police Sgt. Yvonne Christiano. The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, got out just before the 2007 BMW station wagon burst into flames, she said. Officer Dinkelspiel was able to put the fire out with an extinguisher before the flames could spread from the rear compartment. Parsippany District 5 Fire Department arrived shortly after and determined that an improperly-wired battery compartment caused the fire. No one, including the driver, …

Police say they hope to raise statewide seat belt usage to 90 percent.
Be sure to wear your seat belt when you drive—or face the consequences. That's the message from Parsippany Police, which is launching another Click It or Ticket public safety effort. Law enforcement officers will crack down on unbuckled motorists and passengers as part of this national campaign from May 20 through June 2, according to PPD spokesperson Sgt. Yvonne Christiano. The annual initiative includes high visibility law enforcement seat belt checkpoints and saturation patrols, as well as local and national publicity designed to teach drivers and passengers how seat belts can save lives. Christiano said the most effective device for preventing deaths and injuries in motor vehicle crashes remains the seat belt. When used consistently, …

Barberio blasts councilmen seeking mayor's seat for voting against introduction of $62M 2013 spending plan.
The Parsippany-Troy Hills Township Council, by a vote of 3-2, approved the introduction of Mayor James Barberio's proposed $62 million 2013 municipal budget at its Tuesday night agenda meeting at Parsippany High School — and the town's top executive is not happy that the vote wasn't unanimous. Council members Paul Carifi Jr. and Jonathan Nelson, who are both running for mayor in the 2013 election, voted against the measure. Barberio is running for re-election. In a statement released Wednesday, Barberio attacked them both and called on the councilmen to change their votes when the measure comes up for a final vote. The $62,286,803.97 spending plan would result in a zero percent tax increase for residents. "I worked hard on this budget to …

As officers were answering a carjacking call at Paul Miller Land Rover, they heard of another underway at nearby Wawa.
Parsippany Police say they are investigating two carjackings in the township. Officers responded to Paul Miller Land Rover on Route 46 just after 8 p.m. Wednesday to look into a report of an employee who had just been carjacked at gunpoint, according to a police statement. While there, they received word of another carjacking—this one in progress—at the nearby Wawa on New Road. At the Land Rover dealership, an employee told officers that while he was parking a 2013 Range Rover Super Charger, a white car (believed to be an Infiniti) pulled up and two men armed with handguns and wearing bandannas over the lower half of their faces exited the white vehicle and demanded the keys to the Super Charger. The employee reportedly turned over the …
Reason for the investigation reportedly has not been revealed, but defense lawyer calls it 'retaliation' for James Carifi's whistle-blowing.
A Parsippany Police probe is underway against Capt. James Carifi, a member of the township Board of Education, NJ.com reports — and the action may have put the brakes on the man's plan to retire from the force. No comment on the reason for the investigation has been released by the police and town administration so far has not commented, however, Carifi's lawyer, Patrick Toscano, alleges the probe is "direct retaliation" for Carifi's employment suit against the town. Toscano told NJ.com that the department "simply wants to toy with" his client and added that Carifi has not been told why he is being investigated. Carifi filed suit against the town and former Chief Michael Peckerman in 2011, charging them with running afoul of the New Jersey…

Police say fire at Shaya Ahavat Torah was accidental.
Parsippany Police say an overheated electrical cord led to a structure fire just after 6 a.m. Thursday at Congregation Shaya Ahavat Torah on Hawkins Avenue. The fire was discovered by an individual who entered the temple in early morning and smelled smoke, according to a police statement. That person reportedly left the temple and spoke with a neighbor who saw flames coming from the building's rear, ran to his home and brought back a fire extinguisher as 9-1-1 was being called, police said. "The neighbor was able to contain the flames with the extinguisher and a garden hose until Parsippany Fire Districts 5 and 4 [the Parsippany-Troy Hills and Lake Hiawatha departments] arrived at the location and extinguished the blaze," said PPD …
