Neighbors Assist After Lake Hiawatha Purse Snatching

Police seek a man between 5'7" and 5'10" wearing a light grey hoodie and jeans.

The Parsippany Police Department says it is on the lookout for a man in connection with a reported robbery and assault that took place Wednesday night in Lake Hiawatha. At about 8:56 p.m., a group of residents led officers to a woman at Wenonah Avenue whose screams compelled them to come outside and help, according to department spokesperson Ptlm. Earl Kinsey. The women reportedly told the police that she was walking on Wenonah Avenue when a man came behind her, grabbed her purse, knocked her to the ground and fled south toward Lake Shore Drive. Kinsey said he got away with $100 in cash and other items. Kinsey said the man was described as standing between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall and was wearing a light grey hooded …

Nothing new -- hotels in Parsippany are routine areas of Prostitution, the new demographics love to stack and want everything for free and bring no value to the community. When the hotels aren't housing Prostitutes and Pimps they are gouging during the hurricane crisis. On the bright side traffic congestion will be at an all-time high after they rezone most of Parsippany (political kick backs …   more ›

Click It or Ticket Public Safety Campaign Returns

Police say they hope to raise statewide seat belt usage to 90 percent.

Be sure to wear your seat belt when you drive—or face the consequences. That's the message from Parsippany Police, which is launching another Click It or Ticket public safety effort. Law enforcement officers will crack down on unbuckled motorists and passengers as part of this national campaign from May 20 through June 2, according to PPD spokesperson Sgt. Yvonne Christiano. The annual initiative includes high visibility law enforcement seat belt checkpoints and saturation patrols, as well as local and national publicity designed to teach drivers and passengers how seat belts can save lives. Christiano said the most effective device for preventing deaths and injuries in motor vehicle crashes remains the seat belt. When used consistently, …

Council OKs Mayor's Budget Introduction—But Not Unanimously

Barberio blasts councilmen seeking mayor's seat for voting against introduction of $62M 2013 spending plan.

The Parsippany-Troy Hills Township Council, by a vote of 3-2, approved the introduction of Mayor James Barberio's proposed $62 million 2013 municipal budget at its Tuesday night agenda meeting at Parsippany High School — and the town's top executive is not happy that the vote wasn't unanimous. Council members Paul Carifi Jr. and Jonathan Nelson, who are both running for mayor in the 2013 election, voted against the measure. Barberio is running for re-election. In a statement released Wednesday, Barberio attacked them both and called on the councilmen to change their votes when the measure comes up for a final vote. The $62,286,803.97 spending plan would result in a zero percent tax increase for residents. "I worked hard on this budget to …

Yeah it is like looking at the Three Stooges... I want to see a visionary and it is time to clean house of the folks that haven't done a thing for thins community in years. Average taxes have increased yearly over 5% per year so this is a teaser no tax increase year. While taxes have gone up services have not -- I feel we are getting less and less for our money while traffic congestion increases …   more ›

Cops Probe 2 Simultaneous Armed Carjackings

As officers were answering a carjacking call at Paul Miller Land Rover, they heard of another underway at nearby Wawa.

Parsippany Police say they are investigating two carjackings in the township. Officers responded to Paul Miller Land Rover on Route 46 just after 8 p.m. Wednesday to look into a report of an employee who had just been carjacked at gunpoint, according to a police statement. While there, they received word of another carjacking—this one in progress—at the nearby Wawa on New Road. At the Land Rover dealership, an employee told officers that while he was parking a 2013 Range Rover Super Charger, a white car (believed to be an Infiniti) pulled up and two men armed with handguns and wearing bandannas over the lower half of their faces exited the white vehicle and demanded the keys to the Super Charger. The employee reportedly turned over the …

Parsippany attracts the criminals because of all the highways in and out of town, one of the things that makes Parspippany a convenient place to live. And the horrible economy, absolutely dismal in urban areas, force the criminals to look for a place where they can commit their crimes and make a fast get away. Parsippany, the place to be... robbed at gunpoint. There is nothing any police force …   more ›

Investigation Of Police Captain Delays Retirement

Reason for the investigation reportedly has not been revealed, but defense lawyer calls it 'retaliation' for James Carifi's whistle-blowing.

A Parsippany Police probe is underway against Capt. James Carifi, a member of the township Board of Education, NJ.com reports — and the action may have put the brakes on the man's plan to retire from the force. No comment on the reason for the investigation has been released by the police and town administration so far has not commented, however, Carifi's lawyer, Patrick Toscano, alleges the probe is "direct retaliation" for Carifi's employment suit against the town. Toscano told NJ.com that the department "simply wants to toy with" his client and added that Carifi has not been told why he is being investigated. Carifi filed suit against the town and former Chief Michael Peckerman in 2011, charging them with running afoul of the New Jersey…

Please everyone remember, that this will be a primary about the numbers, 1) How many signs are up for each candidate 2)How many attempts are made to deflect the true goings on by the current administration. 3)The amount of raises and golden parachutes that have been arranged. 4) The amount of stories published about questionable decisions by our current Mayor. Lake Hiawatha House Fire Under Investigation

Neighbors say they heard an explosion and then saw responders appear.

Parsippany Police and a number of area fire districts were at the scene of a Saturday afternoon residential fire on Iroquois Avenue in Lake Hiawatha. According to Lake Hiawatha Fire District 4 Chief R.J. Briant, the fire, which was reported shortly after four p.m., is under investigation. Briant said no one was injured in the blaze, but he said officials did not know much more at this time. Right now, we have to wait to see what caused the fire." The Rockaway Neck District 5 department was also on the scene, and Briant said Parsippany-Troy Hills Fire …

Temple Blaze Battled By Firefighter-Helping Neighbor

Police say fire at Shaya Ahavat Torah was accidental.

Parsippany Police say an overheated electrical cord led to a structure fire just after 6 a.m. Thursday at Congregation Shaya Ahavat Torah on Hawkins Avenue. The fire was discovered by an individual who entered the temple in early morning and smelled smoke, according to a police statement. That person reportedly left the temple and spoke with a neighbor who saw flames coming from the building's rear, ran to his home and brought back a fire extinguisher as 9-1-1 was being called, police said. "The neighbor was able to contain the flames with the extinguisher and a garden hose until Parsippany Fire Districts 5 and 4 [the Parsippany-Troy Hills and Lake Hiawatha departments] arrived at the location and extinguished the blaze," said PPD …

New Police Chief Settles In: 'I'm Going to Do My Best'

Paul Philipps said the focus of his term as chief will be to build strong relationships between law enforcers and townspeople.

Parsippany's new police chief is a man of action and service. Having been sworn in last Thursday as the permanent replacement for retired former Chief Anthony DeZenzo, Paul Philipps' resume has been making the rounds, and it details all kinds of activities—Kiwanis Club charity events; riding a bike from New Jersey to Washington, D.C., in the annual Police Unity Tour; running to raise funds for Special Olympics; helping the homeless in Morris County. And when we meet in his new office to discuss his brand-new gig, Philipps talked enthusiastically of another service opportunity he relishes. "I'm a diver now with Rescue and Recovery," he said, pointing to an old copy of his curriculum vitae, which is about to be updated. "In fact, the new …

Knife-Wielding Man Charged in Hiawatha Robbery, Assault, Cops Say

A 23-year-old Parsippany man allegedly turned out to be an unwelcome guest for a Lake Hiawatha resident.

A Lake Hiawatha man is facing charges including aggravated assault and robbery following a movie night Wednesday that appears to have gone awry. Par-Troy resident Ertac Hurman, 23, was among the guests watching movies shortly before 10 p.m. at a residence on North Beverwyck Road, according to a Parsippany Police statement. The host told officers that while watching the film, Hurman stood up and grabbed $120 in cash and a small knife located on a coffee table. "Mr. Hurman placed the knife against the throat of the victim at which time a struggle ensued," said PPD spokesperson Ptlm. Earl Kinsey. "When one of the other guests ran into a different room to call 9-1-1, Mr. Hurman fled the residence on foot with the cash." Kinsey said the victim …
