It's official: Paul Philipps is Parsippany's new Chief of Police. An enthusiastic crowd filled Town Hall Thursday morning to witness the swearing-in of Philipps, who succeeds former Chief Anthony DeZenzo, who retired March 1. Surrounded by his wife Grace and sons Paul Jr. and Tom, Philipps took the oath of office and pledged to the audience that he would do his best to "serve and protect the people of Parsippany." Police say the woman stole from and attempted to flee a Parsippany filling station and convenience store.
Parsippany Police say a Mt. Arlington woman is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail in the Morris County jail following an early Monday morning theft at the Exxon on the Run gas station at Parsippany Blvd. and Route 46 in which she allegedly stole candy bars. Stevie Verbesky, 27, is facing a robbery charge in connection with the incident, police said. At about 1:20 a.m., police were called to the station, which also includes a convenience store, in regard to the reported theft, which had just occurred, according to a police statement. Acting chief gets the permanent title at a Thursday swearing-in ceremony.
Parsippany is getting a new permanent police chief. Acting Chief Paul Philipps will be sworn in as chief of Parsippany Police at a swearing-in ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday in Town Hall's Council Chambers. The announcement came Monday afternoon from the office of Mayor James Barberio. The former deputy chief was named acting chief after the March 1 retirement of Anthony DeZenzo. As part of his duties, Philipps will take on directorship of the township's Office of Emergency Management. Philipps has served as a member of the PPD since 1979. New tool from State Police offers a snapshot of recent crime reporting.
Did it seem January was a quiet month for local police activity? If you noticed fewer crime reports from police, it's due to a more than 50 percent drop in several categories of local crime, according to the New Jersey State Police. A new online system for reporting the month-by-month data collected from local departments by the State Police shows Parsippany crime reported in January 2013 was 51.47 percent less than what was reported in January 2012. Keep in mind that numbers are relative. Even a small change can make a meaningful statistical difference. In the categories of murder and robbery, the township's numbers as reported by Parsippany Police are a little ahead of last year's: Parsippany logged one murder in the first month of 2013…
Police report the trailer's locked door was unbolted and a lock cut off.
Parsippany Police are seeking the person or persons who reportedly broke into a Littleton Road construction trailer last weekend and got away with $6,000 in tools. According to a police statement, the person who reported the crime told Officer Brian Conover that a trailer parked on a Route 202 commercial lot was robbed sometime between 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. Monday. This person told police that a locked fence had been unbolted and its lock cut off. The tools reportedly missing include: a Dewalt Planer, a HEMA Mortiser, a Dewalt Chop Saw, a Eureka Straight Edge Cut guide and Saw and a Skil Circular Saw. Police said the investigation in ongoing. Authorities say $1,100 in items were stolen; anyone with info is asked to contact police.
An investigation is under way into a Tuesday morning report of a burglarized vehicle in the Lake Intervale neighborhood, Parsippany Police said. A police statement said the Lakeside Drive resident who placed the report told Officer Patrick McCarthy that between 8:30 p.m. Monday and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, an unknown person or persons entered the unlocked vehicle and stole 2 Apple iPods, a flashlight and five compact discs. The total value of the items stolen was approximately $1,120.00, police said. Police say March 9 Emily Place residential fire was accidental.
Parsippany Police report no injuries following a structure fire at an Emily Place condominium on the evening of March 9. Just after 7 p.m., the District 5 and District 6 fire companies responded to the scene to battle a blaze whose flames were spotted coming from the first floor of the building by Par-Troy police officers, according to the PPD statement. Also there to assist was the Boonton Fire Department. Police said the fire appeared to be coming from the living room where a window had already been broken by the heat, adding that officers entered the home in hopes of evacuating anyone inside. Police probe into drug distribution led to Tuesday arrest near Knoll Gardens Apartments.
A Parsippany Police probe lead to the arrest Tuesday night of an 18-year-old Lake Hiawatha resident allegedly found to be in possession of 30 bags of heroin. Police say Tolga Gezer was taken into custody at about 8 p.m. Tuesday near Knoll Gardens Apartments after he was found with the heroin. The man faces a charge of heroin possession with the intent to distribute the substance. The arrest comes as part of an ongoing investigation by the PPD's Investigative Division into the distribution of controlled substances within the township, according to a police statement. Mayor James Barberio says he does not bear responsibility for the nearly $400,000 being paid to newly retired Parsippany Police Chief Anthony DeZenzo, who left the job after 18 months as the town's top cop. DeZenzo retired March 1 after a 32-year career in law enforcement—one year with the Morris County Sheriff's Office and the rest with township police. According to retirement calculations from the township obtained through an Open Public Records Act request, DeZenzo finished his PPD career with 418 unused personal, sick and vacation days worth $379,082.31. The breakdown is as follows: Under established regulations, DeZenzo was entitled to 66.6 percent of his unused sick days up to a capped total of 200, which leads to a total of 418 unused days, according to the township's retirement calculations.
